With the next month being work from home and the hour gained from not commuting I was thinking of using the time productively - to either learn something or do something worthwhile.

I know that if I setup some structure and have an end goal I’ll be much more likely to see it through. Has anyone done similar already and might have some ideas?

I’ve so far got cryptic crosswords, the keyboard and replacing iPhone screens as my potential areas of new expertise. Would be very open to something that might help others or share some knowledge but being desk bound limits it somewhat.

Having careless/accident prone kids is a great way to learn how to change iPhone screens, can now do it in about 10 minutes.

Are you aware of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses)?

Leading academic institutions from around the world providing free-to-access courses on - well, anything.

https://www.mooc.org

(I'm currently producing content for a UN sponsored MOOC course on waste management in developing nations).

That's awesome! When it says 8 weeks at 10-12 hrs/week`is that delivery rate fixed - in other words could I do 16 weeks at 5-6hrs a week? That would be more achieveable!

Sign language would be interesting to learn, I was going to do it last lockdown but never got round to it!

Steviebee that looks great will check them out. As a chemist with a previous life in lcd recycling do you need a hand?!

Bodge you’re very correct too - even one of these press up challenges or something similar would do me good. I am a decent cyclist so always struggle around now as daylight riding becomes harder and generally more miserable (and like many, detest running!) so will have a look.

I'm learning the flute in lockdown. I need something with some reasonably measurable goals to keep me sane.

My dream job as a kid was as a car identifier for the police from random photos or snapshots - does anyone remember the You Bet guy who could reel off BMW models by their side profile (or something along those lines - he started it)?

Thinking about it this must now be becoming ever more popular with how much data we collect?
