Hope you guys can help

On my iPhone when I’m on it I may get a notification pop up saying that someone is trying to connect with me on messenger

If I don’t click that notification when it pops up then when I go into messenger the message isn’t there

I must have loads of unread messages

Question is how can I stop this happening and how can I check my existing messages?

I think they have broken the app.
On my S9 and an A71 Messenger has really been playing up with not showing notifications or incoming calls and just being told you have missed a call.

I had that. I could only see the message on my laptop but not my phone so may be worth having a look on there.
