As a Proper Scientist I'm a bit sceptical of psychology... Most people have heard of "multiple personality disorder" The psychologist (not psychiatrist) who identified and first documented it admitted about 20 years later that he had made it all up. Since then of course lots more people have been diagnosed with it...
plus I'm ambitious - but I've yet to make an attempt on my parents life. I have threatened to take them to the old peoples home early though.the article said:

Surely by deffinition any one that comits this type of extreme crime is insane, same with peadophiles (sp?) serial killers etc. How do you know whether to treat them as a criminal or someone with a mental illness. Very tricky.

Narcissitic Personality Disorder is a condition whereby the normal feelings that we might have about being rather special (sometimes), hating seeing others succeed more than you(sometimes) and perhaps thinking you are so important everyone else matter much less (sometimes) and geting angry when someone steals your limelight (sometimes) becomes ALL THE TIME and MASSIVE. When someone suggests you aren't perfect, very special or invincible it really racks you of to the point where you feel you have the right to top them, because for example they won't spend all their money on you when you are so special.
Untreatable because you will never see that anything is wrong with you, because you are after all perfect, everyone likes you and everyting you do is right and true.
Sound like someone you know? Nominations please.

I think this guy must have been the real Spoilt Bastard on whom the Viz cartoon character is based.
For those unfamiliar with him, the comic character, Spoilt Bastard from the magazine VIZ, is a young vain child with a self-sacrificing and suffering mother. The boy is called Timmy Timpson and he lives with his doting, docile mother after his father left following his son's earliest outrageous demand ('bastard' is therefore used in its literal sense).
Timmy spends each story bullying, cajoling and blackmailing his mother into buying him outrageous gifts and trinkets which she cannot afford. Often the stories parody a topical event or phenomenon (ie, Timmy demanding all the merchandise and backstage access at some popular band's concert). At school he is a loudmouthed, cowardly, prejudiced bully though rarely gets his comeuppance either at home or school.
Sounds just like this chap.

I'm of the opinion that everyone knows the difference between right and wrong. People who plead insanity are simply trying to get a reduced sentence - which is a sign of sanity. Also, these people that try and excuse criminals because they have odd personalities are simply excusing guilty people.

I know this may not be remotely relevant to this case, as i don't have the full details (as none of us do) but when I look at this case it strikes me that his parents would have been 42 (mum) and 53 (dad) when he was born.
That could suggest that he was a final chance or fertility treatment child, and as such may well have been indulged beyond all reason from an early age.

That thought had occurred to me, too. My parents were both in their 40's when I was born - I always felt pressurised to make the most of a) opportunities they didn't have as children and b) opportunities they weren't able to offer to my siblings because they were not in such a secure financial position when they were younger. I was sometimes made to feel ungrateful and guilty. Never drove me to murder though!
