The engine is a risk at that money, if you get one pre March 2006 they’re £330 to tax. Great handling though . Pumas are great too though and whilst just as rust-prone as the RX-8 at least engine is a bit more of a safe bet.

Suzuki Ignis Sport. I have abused mine no end in the last 10 years, crashed it loads, its actually bombproof and being 850kg stripped out with circa 105BHP it is quick enough for a bit of fun.

It also has big plastic panels that can be stuck on with builders foam etc. after crashes.

I had a Celica track car which was great fun, people often go for the fastest they can afford and tbh unless you.spend big you will never the the fastest, Renaultsports and ST focuses are everywhere and great on track so just accept that they will go flying by.
Accept that you won't be the quickest and buy something quick enough but reliable, otherwise you cheap track car can suddenly become expensive.
I bought a cheap Celica, added a strut brace and some decent brakes and went and had fun. Not a quick car but handled well and I was able to push harder than those with 30k at risk of they crash

One guy who was having real fun on my last track day was driving a MG ZR, said he paid £500 for it, but £250 into it and he was loving it. Cheap parts and plenty of crashed examples to pick spare from make that a good choice too

I usually shop in this bracket myself for track cars, well sub £1500 anyway. So far I've had:

Mk6 Firsta ST
Mk2 Mazda MX5
R53 Mini Cooper S.

All have been great cars in their own ways, overall my favourite is the Mini. I have never owned a Clip Sport because prices on them are definately on the up, the days of finding one for a grand are gone because all the cheap ones have been tracked to death or will be.

My advice is though at the price point beggars cant be choosers and my usual method is to go on the usual classified sites put in the budget and within say 50 miles and scroll through and see what catches your eye.

With both the Fiesta and the Mini ive had to drop at least a grand on maintenance straight away just to get them near track ready.

The Mazda was the cheapest overall id say.
