If you purchase goods overseas and they are used overseas for 12 months such as household items, (it also used to include motor vehicles but i am not up todate on that any more), and then they are imported back into the UK on your return to the UK should be free from any import or VAT tax.
Any goods purchased in the UK then sent overseas for your use can have the VAT reclaimed, but if they are subsequently returned back to the UK before a period of twelve months from export, then you are due to pay some VAT/tax dependent on time outside the UK etc.
So ask DHL what the charge is for.
