water temperature sender unit

Just a query really.
Having stuck my head under the bonnet (96 Serp)for a quick looksie 'as you do' I was trying to spot the temperature sender. From earlier discussions I knew that it was behind the Distributor and also knew there was a second one just below it which is not used on the TVR.
Sure enough, I found the TVR sender with wire coming from it, but the unit is stuck out from the block on a short extension.
My query is this, why was the original sender(Rover I assume) not used in preference to the current one. Was it just because it was slightly less accessible?
I know that some knowledgable people prefer to revert to the old sender (with suitable adjustment) because it is sat in water rather than on an extension that has the potential for being affected by the air differentials under the bonnet.
As I say, just a query, but somebody probably knows.

Probably because the Rover sender isn't compatible with the instruments. Hence the need for compensating resistor(s) when it is used.

Not quite, the hole had to be filled with something, the Range Rover heater was in that position. There is nothing wrong with using the "spare sender" many have in the event of the TVR one going wrong, saves draining water, possible air locks and the only cost will be 27p. A variable resistor to calibrate and ignore the "poopers" who say its not accurate, the original was hardly that ! Drop me an email for info.
