I use YouTube music as I have YouTube premium (worth it to get rid of the adverts alone), seems to work ok for me?I had Spotify ages ago but had a technical issue I couldn't resolve so dropped it and never looked back.
Youtube Music doesn’t (or at least, didn’t when I tried) support gapless playback on my uploaded files. That for me is a bit of a joke.
I haven’t really decided what route to take now. Whether to set up a NAS in my house and download for offline playback, and use MP3s on my phone instead of streaming... or subscribe to a different streaming service such as Deezer, Tidal or Amazon HD.
Youtube premium is a rip off and I can’t be arsed to mess around with a VPN to try and get it cheaper when it’ll probably get shut down when they eventually crack down on it and I have to start the whole process all over again.

I was the same, but then I started watching YouTube instead of actually TV as that is where the motoring content is, meaning that it made sense to go for the premium option to avoid adverts etc. The music was a by product and seems to work quite well for me as I can download it. The only thing missing is burning it to a CD, but then I don't use CDs anymore either, except in my ancient car that I drive an hour or two a week. colin_p said:

It is a very nice bit of premium software and works in android auto as well.Well worth the price for the full and unlocked version.

Thanks. No luck yet. I've some Google Play music synced with my pc iTunes, and some saved to SD card, because of the unreliable BB. Not found either. Tried iSync (iTunes on PC) and Rocket Player, transferred some of it.
I may just buy a Mp3 player with plenty of storage and load it from my PC. Frustrating, Play Music was just what I needed.
I had this problem today too (first time I'd tried to use Google Play Music since they discontinued it).
The YouTube music app can play your local media, but the option isn't enabled by default.
You have to go in to the settings area (click on icon at top right, then "Settings"). From the settings options, pick "Library and downloads", and then toggle "Show device files" to on.
After doing this, if you click on the "Library" icon, a tab appears at the top of each sub-section (artists, albums etc.) called "Device files". Once you've got to that stage, it then works much like the old Google Play Music app. So they've basically made it harder to access your own content - which I guess was a commercial decision to push users towards paying for their streaming service. Personally, no thanks, I like to manage my own content

It's a complete mess. I was grandfathered in at the original price so have been using GPM since its inception and YouTube Music is in no way a direct replacement.
All of my playlists are messed up, I'm pretty sure some tracks/albums are missing, and it's really driving me away from the whole Google product offering.
If Apple Music offered casting I'd be on it like a shot, but otherwise I may have to look at Spotify or something.

Thanks for this, I tried what you suggested. Most of my Play Music library is still missing, complete artists, not just songs.
That's weird - mine seems to list all my songs, artists and albums. Perhaps there's a limit on the size of the "new" database? Or maybe its not looking in a particular folder anymore? I don't use it that much, only when I go out for a run with my phone - so I've probably got less than 1Gb of audio on my phone (or memory card I think).I did notice the "search" function didn't include "local" files though.
