Welcome to the dark side brother.
Seriously though, that sounds a bit steep to me. Any good with a screwdriver? I did see a tutorial on how to take one of these lenses apart and fix them not soo long ago. IIRC someting plastic had worn inside and was pretty obviouse upon inspection.
I'll have a look for the link

My Canon 100-400 IS lens seemed to stick when I was at Oulton Park last week. Afterwards the thing seemed to go all soft focus. I sent it back via my dealers to Canon for repair. Just got the estimate
£356 !!
ouchhh
Hmm.... How old is it? One assumes it's out of warranty, but by how much? Given the cost of a lens and it's design/purpose, it's not unreasonable to expect one to last well beyond the warranty period without failing.
Start making noises to whoever the lens was bought from about it being "fit for purpose" and of "reasonable quality". Warranty doesn't really come into it, it's more statutory rights under the sale of goods act.
Of course if you bought it from ebay then that's all out the window
