Confused about yellow boxes

Regarding yellow crossed boxes on the road. As far as I’m aware, unless you are turning right, you can not enter it unless the box in front of u is empty and there is at least one car space empty on the other end for you to move into.
I see people break this rule all the time particularly at traffic lights. Was at traffic light which asa it turns green people pAss the line and over a yellow box one behind the other but the traffic keeps flowing on the other end so people come out of the box.
If we are to follow the rule then asa light turns green asa first person enters box then person behind must stop before box and wait for first person to pass and leave one space before person two tries to pass. I tried this at a busy junction today (being person 2) and asa I stopped before a the box person behind me nearly hit me in the rear
And he horned at me as thought it was my fault.
I’m pretty sure everyone just goes over the box together and when light is red the last lot get through because the road going across is also controlled by traffic lights.
Anyway I hope You get what I’m saying. All I know Ian if I try this again I’m gonna get reared but is it not the rules?

Some choose to interpret this that "as long as the traffic doesn't stop it'll remain clear" however that is still technically wrong (although you wouldn't get "done" for it as long as you didn't stop in the box).

I think you should just keep going round the block and turn right at this junction again and again. You're quoting the highway code, not the law (see TSGDR 2016, p167. Part 7, 11-1): "the yellow criss-cross marking provided for at item 25 of the sign table in Part 6 conveys the prohibition that a person must not cause a vehicle to enter the box junction so that the vehicle has to stop within the box junction due to the presence of stationary vehicles."So providing you don't cause your vehicle to stop in the box, no offence committed AIUI. However if as described elsewhere you want to take a chance with a single vehicle space another can drive into before you get there, you're taking a chance... ETA: In other words the highway code is the one choosing a particular interpretation (to simplify for the general reader).
Personally I move if I can see that the traffic on the other side is going to consistently move forward, even if there isn't yet a space to go into as the movement has reached the back of the queue yet.

Trouble with London traffic is that if you don't get your elbows out and move immediately into any gap in front of you, you can actually end up going backwards in a forwards moving queue of traffic.
This in turn will get you grief from the next 375 cars behind you.

It used to be the case that the enforcement involved human decision making - someone looks at the camera feed and decides whether or not the driver is due a ticket. If this is still the case, you can email pointing out, for example, that your exit was clear when you entered the box but some cheeky chappie jumped in to block your exit.
The only yellow box ticket that I have received was cancelled when I emailed to say (truthfully) that I was turning right and the car ahead was doing so also.

This is pretty much what happened to me at the Hammersmith roundabout a while back; my path was clear and as I was mid-way through a large yellow box when someone cut me up and I was forced to stop. This gives details of the regulations and gives the following

If you had an unimpeded access to the space on the other side of the yellow box when you entered it and then another car cut in front of you requiring, you to stop that is a basis of an appeal because you were not stopped because of the presence of stationary vehicles but rather a vehicle cutting across and impeding your exit.‘

It was two lanes of traffic going straight ahead. The traffic in front crossed it and I held back in the right hand lane at the start of the box and then a space cleared ahead. I proceeded across the box but as I was in the middle of the box a couple of cars in the left lane that had miscalculated and were stuck in no man's land switched lanes as I was about the take the empty space. I was left in the final third of the box, creeping forward at half a mile an hour. I didn't actually come to a dead stop, technically but I doubt that will save me, but I've no idea if there was a camera there.

Oh yes it is! The regulations are only concerned with stopping in the yellow box, not entering. The Highway Code does not accurately reflect the legislation/regulations.An earlier poster has already explained this fully.
