Putting a turbo in a BMW 340i
Discussion
Hi, inexperienced on the site and this is my first post.
My kids are getting older, my old Corsa is going to my eldest, and I was considering buying a project car with some oomph.
I’d like to buy a BMW 340i and put a turbo in it, preferably a high performance one 😉. Has anyone done anything similar? Are there any other modifications that I would need to do as a result of the increase in power? What performance increases could I expect?
Thanks for any help.

The B58 in the 340i is a fairly robust enough engine that has plenty of power stock. They’ll easily push 400bhp with a stage 1 remap, won’t need major hardware done unless you’re wanting to push for big power numbers.
In all honesty, if you wanted to go for a 340i, I’d probably look more at handling mods & some proper Michelin tyres on it!

Which is it?I am fairly mechanically astute, compared to the average person. Yet the idea of turbo charging a car terrifies me. Its alot of work, especially in something modern.
Assuming this isnt a wind up, just forget the idea.
Four kids, a people carrier for the family, but a ‘04, 1L, 3 cylinder Corsa for driving to work (a long way, as I work away, or did, before corona). Eldest is now 17, so he can have the Corsa. I want to upgrade now they’re getting older.
I wanted to get a big engined car and turbocharge it. BMW was the first thing I thought of. Any other cars more suitable you can think of?

Obvious troll is too obvious.
Ovo is even some kind of shorthand for obvious.
I’m not a troll. I’ve got no idea about this stuff. I realise that for some of you, you speak with people who know all about it in here, all the time, in a knowledge ‘bubble’. I thought it might be a good community to ask questions and to learn from. However, if this isn’t a place for ‘noobs’, please give me the name of a website that is. Thanks mate, probably good advice. In all honesty, if you wanted to go for a 340i, I’d probably look more at handling mods & some proper Michelin tyres on it!

So you're genuinely driving a corsa/people carrier and want more performance so have decided you want a 340i but without having driven one or looked into their standard performance havr already decided you want/need to turbo charge it?The step up in performance is going to be significant.

The 340i already has a 325hp 3.0 litre, 6 cylinder turbocharged engine. It's pretty fast. Take one for a test drive and see if it's quick enough for you. As has already been mentioned, the B58 is very amenable to tuning, so if you do want more grunt, then 400hp off a tune is easily achievable. My kids are getting older, my old Corsa is going to my eldest, and I was considering buying a project car with some oomph.

If you want a project car with a big engine to try turbocharging yourself, the 340i is not the right choice.

If your past driving experience is a Corsa and a people carrier, I would try something a little less brutal then a 340i. Undoubtedly a great car, but a giant leap in performance.....
You might be pleasantly surprised by a 328i (other brands are available).
When lockdown finishes go and try a few different things, it really is the best way.
PS if you want a turbo, I would upgrade to fuel injection first

If you want a project BMW 135i or 335i with the N54 engine would be a good starting point, plenty of tuning advice out there all the way up past (allegedly) 800WHP. Alternatively a C4 Corvette for similar money/potential.
The modern Mx35i/40i cars are docile enough for the performance on tap, can't see a reason to avoid them provided you are sensibly prudent with the right pedal.
