I have had my Mission speakers since 2001 and one of them has just blown frown

My Mother in Law has stayed with us for both lockdowns and watches TV at crazy levels due to being part deaf. Clearly near 4 months of this abuse has finally killed the speaker.

As its my MIL, my missus feels bad, so I can probably get away with a nice new set.

I have a Yamaha amp, which can do up to 10 speakers.
The setup curently is

2 x front corners, mid size on wall mounts.
1 x Central speaker
2 x rears

I used to have a sub, but that died years ago.

It's all wired and I want to continue with wired. I have a Sonos in another room and dont really like it.
Someone said to me that Mission aren't the quality that they once were. I'm open to any suggestions really.

Many Thanks
Andy

So many to choose from....

What's your budget?

Would you buy secondhand?

Would you go satellite and sub?

Also I think Mission have been bought by IAG that whilst a large conglomerate, I have read good reviews of Mission products recently. Perhaps they've got their mojo back?

I don't know, but I would rather pay the right price and buy once.
I guessing it would be around £2k?

Decent budget to work from. Do you want satellites with sub, floorstanders or stand mounted?

I already have wall mounts in place, so would prefer to re-use them if possible.

The wiring is still in place for the sub too, so it would be good to get one back running.

I went from mission to monitor audio. I have the gold series but they’re all decent, obviously the more you pay the better though. They sound great.

Mission were indeed bought by IAG many years ago.
Now made in China, like quad and all the other brands they bought.
For your budget try Monitor Audio which are highly rated ,but I don't know well.
The other option I would suggest is Dali.
They are good sounding and very well finished for the price.
The Oberon series should be in budget, you could probably get a 5.1 system including sub for that price.

And a pair of headphones for the MIL, cheaper than replacing speakers.

BK for the sub. There’s a variety of models to suit budgets and sizes, all highly rated.

I like Kef for the rears and centre, either the Eggs which have been around for years and you can normally pick up from eBay, or the T101/301 which look smart being so flat to the wall.

Monitor is a good shout for the main speakers, they’ve just refreshed the Bronze range so there are some bargains on the old models.

Like everything you get more for your money second hand, have a look over on av forums to see what’s available.

Many thanks for your suggestions so far. I have been looking online at each of the suggestions.

I would prefer not to mix and match as I don't know enough to get the choice right. So instead started looking at 5.1 packages for the same brands. It would seem almost all the setups use large floor standing front speakers when you look at the package deals. This wouldn't really work for my living room.

Are there any sets that have really good wall mount corners? At the front, I have the mounts in place where you screw a spike into the speakers to keep them in place.

Looking through a list on line, the first one I found which would work in my room are the new Missions. https://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/product/65885/...

I really liked the Dali Oberons to be honest, but I can't see that they have a similar package in terms of speaker sizes. Would these Mission four corner speakers perform as well as something like this https://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/product/64581/...

It's not a huge room, there just isn't a place to easily put 2 x floor standing speakers.

I'm happy that the Dalis would outperform the Missions and also be a much better finish.
From the website you looked at there are smaller Dali packages there.

https://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/product/64526/...

For example.

There's also a specific Dali wall mount bracket available for the speakers.

Hope you get something you like.

Before you do, have a look at the Q Accoustics Concept 20 - they're a 5-6 years old now but still current at a lot of places, got great reviews, and about 45% cheaper than release price - two pairs for front/rear and the centre would be £660 versus £1100ish at release (there's proper wall mounts for them too for £45 pair https://petertyson.co.uk/q-acoustics-glass-speaker... )

And BK Electronics for a sub, what one really depends on the size of your room - keep an eye on their ebay page as they often do 'B' grade that usually are brand new.

I've not heard the Dali package, but generally the sub is the weak point in 5.1 packages (not always obvs) so best to buy from a company that specialises in subs IMO.
Maybe have a chat with VEX and see what he recommends at that price point?

Lots out there and at this price it really comes down to recommendations, your ears if you can get a demo and looks.

Monitor Audio has always been a winner here, i love them too, Dali is one that has got a growing following and we are starting to love Totem and KLH too.

In that package, as said, that sub is deffinately the weak point, the good thing is if you go for a pack without the sub, you would still have a good bunce for a sub withiut getting close to your top.

We love SVS and there is a good BlackFriday deal kicking around on their older SB and PB-2000's

Not for surround duties, purely music but I have some Dali Zensor 1 speakers and they are beautiful sounding.

I auditioned them against various other similar speakers and they just sounded sweeter and flattered the cheap amp I was using.

I would love some Dali satellites in my lounge to replace my Cambridge Audio minxs but I'm not sure if my wife would allow this as the CA are very discreet.

Echo this point about a subwoofer specialist. I have a bk Gemini II and it is awesome. Beautiful build quality too.

Mind you, the ones that come in a package will probably be ok at that kind of money. It's just that a standalone one will be a bit better.

My new Dali Oberons arrived today.

I got a bit worried as the courier dropped off just one box. My heart sank as I thought all of the speakers were in this one box and were going to be tiny.
However a second courier came with the rest of the boxes (4 in total). Seems a good deal for a £5 Saturday delivery (2 vans)

I have the corners and centre up and running, but can't do the sub as I need a speaker cable to RCA adapter. Found one on Amazon, that will be here on Monday.

The output level and clarity compared to my Missions is shocking. So so much better.

Last night, on the old setup, we watched War Horse as my wife had never seen it before. Today, I watched again the part of the film where the horse is running through no mans land. Wow, I am blown away with how much better the sound effects and music score is. The explosions, even without the sub working yet have more depth.

Over the moon with my new speakers, many thanks for the suggestions and help offered here.

I realise many people were suggesting alternative Sub to the one included. But to be honest, for the size of the room, it's awesome without a sub and I wouldn't want to over do the bass. So I think it will be fine.
