Our very own Toaster Pilot has recently done a video on the iX and seems to rather like it.

It’s entirely subjective of course, but my reaction on opening the page says it all for me. Good grief, that’s ugly.

huuuuge grill and narrow squinty lights don't do it for me.

Not really relevant as I don't need/want and SUV and I wouldn't pay what they're asking anyway.

This will be over £65-70k on launch I expect but what does it compare with EQC ?

The iX3 will be £60k+, this is likely to be £85k+ apparently.

Class above the EQC and E-Tron size wise so X5/Q7/GLE alternative.

When they've done the i8 and the i3 how on earth did they come up with that thing?

That rear quarter has a very 'black cab' look about it

There is a company that "Fixes" the LR Discovery rear number plate issue, and one that improves the Aston Martin Vantage front bumper.

I think there's a fair few tuner and body kit businesses that will be making some easy money off the back of the entire BMW range.

I wonder if Alpina will be allowed to do anything. hehe

Ugly can be ‘jolie-laide’. This is certainly not that - this is just plain ugly.

To be fair, OP did use quotes around his description.

My first thoughts were Breaking Bad.

That looks exactly like those cars the Chinese used to make where they (sort of) replicated what they thought were the salient design features of a western marque and came up with something eye-bleeding.

I think their marketing strategy is to make the thing so ugly that you'll have to buy one because that way you can sit inside it and not have to look at it.

Looks like an angry person with a narrow black moustache.

In fact it reminds me of a certain figure in history who was prominent in the late 1930s to 1945.

It is ugly. Probably should be taken out and shot.

Crass and hideous to Western eyes maybe. Probably designed for the Chinese market where they love aggressive looking bling.

Putting the hideous current BMW grill to one side for the moment I don't understand why they insisted on trying to align the side profile with the 7-8 year old styling of the i3?

It just doesn't work when scaled up and makes the vehicle look like a member of the Kardashian family.

There is no doubting that the looks are challenging, especially to anyone brought up with the smaller pair of kidney grilles.

I don’t envy their designers to be honest.

There are a couple of ‘sacred’ elements to BMW design language that they are seemingly stuck with.

The most obvious one is two distinctly shaped grilles either side of a vertical divider with the badge ‘resting’ between them.

This worked ok for a very long time time.

The problem they have is that the grilles have become largely redundant with the advent of EVs.

For their EVs, Audi, Jaguar and Merc have persisted with ‘fake’ grilles to maintain brand identity, they do however have the advantage of starting with a fairly regular shaped single aperture that can be more easily blended into the face of an EV.

Having said that, all 3 are nothing much in the looks department, maybe Audi have the edge with the latest E-Tron Sportback, but even that has a grille that is best described as middling.

For BMW, they either ditch their entire design language, and start from scratch (not going to happen) or evolve the design.

For the iX3 they have played it safe with a pair of smaller apertures over the number plate bar with a larger mouth below.

Yeah it sort of works to not offend, but to me it’s boring, unadventurous and will date quickly, like many previous designs based on this approach.

I’m pretty sure the BMW design team feel the same way especially as the Chinese market is by far their most important.

So they are left with pretty much one option to try to remain avant-garde and appeal to growth markets, and that’s what you see in front of you...

Subtle? As a fire in a fireworks factory perhaps.
