Alright folks,

I appreciate we're talking different ends of the spectrum here. But I'm really not sure here which I should go for, but do have up until January to decide (When my current car fails its MOT spectacularly).

I wanted a fast petrol with DECENT mpg on motorways ~40mpg so looked at a TT-S that seemed like a tidy package of car. I have test drove one and still pretty keen. Can get a sub 65k miles for £10-11k

I then also humored the idea of a E or C350 CGI as there were a couple available at one point, with high spec (pan roof, uprated sound system). But increasingly unlikely I will go back to Mercedes for my next car, so not really keen on that.

I then randomly came across a F12 high spec 640D and now have become interested in that as sometimes they come up at good value around £10-11k sub 70k miles. Seems like a lot of car for the money, twin turbo diesel, with stock 308bhp and 0-6 sub 6 seconds in a car that big?

Please let me know your opinions if you have had either car!

I've had both and I enjoyed both for different reasons. The TTS felt light and nimble and I really liked that, but I found it to be quite thirsty over the 67k miles I did(27mpg overall). I loved the way that the 640d looked, but it did feel quite a big and heavy car though. Overtaking was effortless though, and it returned 40mpg overall over the 70k miles I did in it.

Neither car has very communicative steering, and they both suffer from a poor ride. Other than that though they were both very nice cars overall I thought. I'd have them both again for sure. thumbup

Thanks! Which one did you have first and surely you would be more OK with a bad ride in a TT-S than a 6 series? Also does the 640d actually have a lot of space? I was in the series before the f12 and aside from a decent boot, you couldn't fold seats down and so was quite tight in the back?

You'll get sub-30mpg most likely.

There's a nice looking example advertised in Warrington, but IMO they want too much for it. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202010014...

It's been up for a few weeks now, go bid them hard. smile

Had the TT-S first. As you say you can forgive the ride a bit with it being a sporty car(plus the wheels were 19" so to be expected to be fair).

It was the run flats and 20" wheels on the 640d that made the ride pretty punishing on broken tarmac/over pot holes. On smooth tarmac it was fine though. If I had another I'd drop down to the 19" wheel I think.

You are spot on regards the inside of the 640d, mine was the Coupe(F13) and it was pretty tiny inside for what is a big car on the outside. The rear seats are tight for adults, but it does feel roomy enough in the front though. I think that the 640 is one of the best looking Bmw's of recent times and I loved the way it looked(still do!).

Nice cars!

Would be the 6 for me, how much better is a 640d over a 435d I wonder? (Sorry to thread hijack)

Thank you. thumbup

The 435d is a fair bit quicker, but the 640d does have a much more special feeling interior for me though. The 435d is xdrive only too, whereas I like that the 640d is RWD. Both good cars though for sure.

The interior on the 6 series is a proper step ahead & it makes it more of an event, the 435d suspesion setup is one I find slightly off but a spring change helps with this.

I really wanted a sub 6s 0-60 at stock conditions. The 350cdi doesnt do that, also isnt the e class quite boat in corners?

No they corner well & the 265bhp E350's do 0-60 in 6.1 secs.

Do you think the value will fall off a cliff in comparison to a similar spec tts??

No as both are mass market & both will appeal to buyers.

Have you any experience of how the cabriolet compare to the coupe? I'm also looking at the 350cdi facelift but the cabs really appeal at the moment.

The coupe is obviously the drivers choice but the drop top is a nice place to be which you'll prefer will be dependent on what you want from your car, test drive both & you'll know which one you prefer.

So I've been going round the houses a bit whilst I continue to save towards biting on a purchase. I know I was strongly considering a 640d however the equivalent petrol wasnt even in price range and would be horrible on economy. I have 2 questions, why would you go CDI over CGI and also what about the C350 CGI??

Please see this one https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202010305...

You wouldn't.

I had the E350 cdi and then the CGI.

The petrol is a different level altogether, amazingly refined when pottering around, and then put it in sport and keep it above 3000rpm and it comes alive and feels like a different car.

The cdi returned 34mpg average (read 39mpg on the dash) and the petrol returned 31mpg.

Mine were estates, so heavier cars.

I bought the E350 petrol as a stop gap and ended up keeping it for 2.5 years and took it from 50k to 113k miles.

Not sure I would buy one over a 6 series though.
