I may be imagining this, but I’m sure one of the recent generations on Golf engines (EA888, but aren’t they all) have some secondary injectors, I assume in the inlet to stop carbon build up which now comes with direct port injection.

Any ideas?

I believe the Golf R / S3 / Cupra had secondary injection from ~2013 - 2018, with WLTP compliant cars from 2018 / 2019 going back to single direct injection.

Thank you. A shame GTI’s didn’t also come with the secondary injection.

Is there a known fix for this yet? A catch can kit following a walnut blast?

I think the GTIs also had dual injection in the UK before WLTP. I don't know whether or not the lower powered models lost it with wltp but I believe there are DI retrofit options available. There's also different setups for different global markets so it's all dependent on where you purchased your car.

Hmm. Certainly looking at UK only cars. Likely pre facelift so assume pre WLTP/PPF. It would be great to get engine codes to confirm what has what .......

I'd say that you'd only need to open the bonnet on a pre-wltp car to see if there's an additional fuel rail.

No that’s great. I know what I’m looking for now. If the GTI never came with it I would never have bothered looking.

Why? I had a 8P S3 and that had DI only. It does eventually make them run a little rough, and when I took the inlet off it was truly revolting! and something I couldn’t tackle myself.

That generation of TFSI had so many issues and preventative maintenance that had to be done it was silly. DV, cam tappet, PCV, cam chain tensioner, oil pick up pipe......

Carbon build up isn't too much of an issue on most turbocharged cars.

While of course not pretty it's very rare it leads to rough running or performance issues.

On the NA cars (Audi RS4 etc) then it can have more of an impact.

Unfortunately not my experience. Whilst I never got it done on my S3 (and it did need it), we did get our old R56 Cooper S with the N18 engine walnut blasted. I thought it was the fuel pump issue, but it was rough running from carbon build up.

So what did we do? Buy a F56 MCS with the DI B48 engine!
