Mark 4 Golf Turbo no boost really strange.
Discussion
Hi All,
Just too starting apologise if this is in the wrong section I thought it would come under technical>engine
My Car : MKIV Golf GT TDI PD150 - 128,000
I've recently had my car at the garage the guys there are reputable been going 25 years and my dad knows them well so dont think they would be lying but I'll explain...
Basically on the 9th of October I dropped my car off for a service and a MOT.
Due to money issues he kept my car there till the 28th too which it was MOT'd and he then drove it too my house. My dad has owned this car for 3 years and myself a few months and new had any engine issues.
I've been turning the car over every day or two and letting it run as normally it's my daily.
It's been sat for 2 weeks on my front and I thought it didnt sound like I could hear the turbo when reving so asked my dad too drive the car down the road and sure enough the cars a potato no power.
When he dropped the car off 2 weeks ago if that he said it was fine and surely would have noticed the turbo not working as the car struggling to pick up speed.
I'm not insured till the 1st so cant take it too the garage till then.
Am I doing any harm turning the car over if the turbos not working right ?
I heard it could be the actuator rod stuck open giving me 0/ little boost.
Any ideas I've not moved the car anywhere just been started revved a little and turned off surely that wouldnt break my turbo ?
I have 0 lights on the dash
I've also checked the EGR valve that's closed.
The MAF sensor is plugged in and screwed tight.
Theres no obvious engine issues as the car still starts and goes in gear just no boost it feels like.
It feels like it wants to go but then just drops out I'm wondering if the actuator would be stuck open with cold weather or something just with the car literally not moving for two weeks I dont understand how my turbo would break.
FYI I've just let the car get too 90 temp and drove it down the road and it's a sack of s
t pardon my french.
Any advice appreciated.

Why on earth would you do that ?But no, it would not cause the problem. It may just be coincidence a problem has occurred between the garage leaving it back.
Could be a simple hose or boost solenoid issue.
Why not speak to the garage that had it, and can legally drive it and look at it ?
Or by doing your starting routine (like Stevie says above not sure why you did) you may have clogged/stuck up the vanes on the VNT Turbo lack of use can also cause stiction causing a boost issue
if it reaches an over-boost condition for example the vehicle will go into limp mode (no boost) this seldom flags the eng malfunction IME on these at least not instantly , it really needs to be plugged in to monitor live/real time data or your just pissing in the wind , a faulty air mass can create a similar issue and so on and so on , get it plugged in or your/we're just guessing

That's very bad for the engine and just about the worst thing you can to a car which is not being used.If you aren't going to drive it, leave it alone. Use a battery maintainer to keep the battery topped up.
This may not be the cause of whatever boost problem you have, but will be causing acid build-up within the engine which will knacker everything.
Before anyone thinks I've just been running the car I didnt know the turbo was broke ! I'm getting insured in two weeks so didnt think running the engine would do much considering it's been driven daily. And literally next week friday I'll be driving the car.
I only know about the turbo from me reving if I did as you said I would have got too friday next week and wouldnt have known I have a broken turbo until I got in the car.
Also I'm not a mechanic and only doing what i thought was right.
I've already contacted the garage they're going to have a look on the 1st just wanted to see if it could have been a loose pipe etc.
Instead of saying why on earth have I dont that. Could just say that wasnt good for the engine and going forward wouldnt run it anymore to avoid damage.
I'm 22 not a mechanic and this is my first car that I want to get into modifying. So appreciate help more than bashing me for things i didnt know i was doing wrong...

If that's the case then I'll get it plugged in. I only just noticed this issue and I've other cars before and done the same thing for a week or two and never had any issues. I dont have a spare battery nor do I have the means to go and buy a spare. I've just forked out loads for the MOT And I've just paid a £1000 on insurance and I'm 22....
Only posted as I didnt want to have to go to the garage and spend more money as I've already forked out so much to get the car back on the road.
If that's the case. I'll just delete the post and get it plugged into OBD...
I've posted on other forums before and never had people jumping at me 'you're doing this wrong wtf'
Only asked for help guys geez...

Running the car and knowing whether there are turbo issues are irrelevant.
And if the car is in daily use, why on earth would you just be starting it and letting it run ? That's mental.
It's unlikely the cause of any problems...but it's just mental.
But if the car is literally like this after it was returned by the garage...why would you not ask the garage ?
And the reason many feel they're "getting jumped on" or whatever way you want to pout it....is because you will get honest answers and information here. Less Bulls
t.
Although many do seem to get offended by honest answers because they are not what they want to hear.

Could have told me in other ways and if I dont run it my battery is gunna die obviously. I dont have jump leads or the means to hook it up too another battery.
I dont mind honest answers.... just theres nicer ways of speaking to people who arent as experienced as others.
I'm 22 with a issue that posted in here for, for help obviously.
Like I've already said I cant 100% say it was done out of the garage as I've been running the car two weeks after he dropped it off.
He is going to look at it and it might be something as simple as a pipe or something.
I was more looking for what too expect and if this is a massive issue.
Can people actually provide what they would do next.
I'm not a mechanic and didnt know I was damaging the car... was just keeping the battery alive like I've done in the psst

Me being honest:
Your posts seem to contradict themselves.
Was it being driven daily at the same time that you were starting it up and leaving it running?
Or, was the car a daily driver in the past, then, at some point, it wasn’t used anymore, so you went out and ran it on the drive for a few minutes each day?
A car can take quite a few miles of driving to take the battery charge back to where it was before the starting operation. A few minutes idling won’t do it. You’ll gradually flatten the battery.
Diesels can take ages to properly warm up, and idling on the drive could take hours in cold weather.
Top tip: maybe ask the questions before trying these things. Yes, you’ll get the usual morons posting insults, but along the way, there’ll be some very useful info from knowledgeable people who earn their living or spend their lives keeping cars working.
Good luck!

Hello,
Just an update on the car. Its hopefully not as serious as I thought. I drove the car yesterday for the first time on the dual carriageway next to my house, there's a small hill climb and the car definitely struggled it started to lose speed then the engine management light came on.
I was on the way to the mechanic anyways for him too check it I'm glad the light came on as at least i know a code was going to be thrown up. It also came up with 'Emissons Workshop' is that just a generic message ?
Got to the mechanics the car itself starts fine and its producing any abnormal sounds.
I revved the car for him and he could feel the pipes a little bit hes plugged it in anyways and its came up with 2 codes.
I should have got the codes to be honest but forgot in the heat of the moment.
However one code was listed as 'Charge Pressure - Negative deviation '
He said it could be the boost sensor not working, or stuck vanes.
Hopefully he'll have it sorted it Monday its about £40 I think other than that he said he'd have to sort the vanes out but hopefully come 5pm ill be boosting my way too work!
I guess these things happen, but if you love a car enough, money doesn't matter hopefully it'll start loving me back now its had a bit spent on it 😅
Can anyone recommend a place for silcone piping for the engine bay as the pipes are looking quite old and there's cracking in the rubber plus it would spruce the engine bay up a bit.
