Apologies if a repost
and also, for the daily mail link

I guess we can't say we are surprised

It does say the schemes are not imminent but it will be coming.

I guess we all need to enjoy our cars as best we can until we are priced out of it.

I think this is as much about tracking as it is about taxation. And has come from supranational influence.

It’s in the fail so how seriously you take it is one thing, but I think the Govt need to start hitting the likes of Google, Amazon, Facebook et al for a suitable amount of tax commensurate with their income from the UK rather than murdering the motorist as usual.

I'm guessing it means black boxes/trackers all round then. Maybe time to buy shares in a suitable tech company that can roll-out millions of boxes?? I do wonder how this scheme can actually be implemented & how costly it would be to administer....

I'm "only" 32 and did hope I'd at least get a couple more decades of driving freedom before the EV / Road Pricing grim reaper came calling. It's not even as if we'll be offered any alternative at the ballot box because the opposition have been calling for this for a while now. If these policies are the way BoJo is heading, I hope they become his Poll Tax moment but unfortunately I don't think we can rely on the British public to grow a pair and stand-up for themselves any more; half of them will probably think this is a good thing so we're all screwed. frown

Remember "ending the war on the motorist"? smile

They say what they need to get elected and then continue the London Centric agenda.

It's been on several radio stations in the last hour, and also on Sky tv - I do find it sad how people 'apologise' if they mention the Wail. There's no need, what the fk do you think is gonna happen to you, a crowd of wail/fail haters are gonna come round and beat you up? shoot what a sad bunch we've become.

Plus it's old news.
Several papers and the media, including the Grauniad (if you want some daft balance), led with this in the summer (June) when that dick Edmund King, the AA president started touting this was a great idea (his!) and called on the government to introduce a 'road miles' pricing system for drivers.
Edmund loves shoving his face on tv and interviews pleading he has the motorist at heart. Like hell he does. Now you know who to blame, and it's not the media, not even the 'wail'. It's King. I bet if I posted a pic up of him, you'd say 'Oh, him.' hehe

As if mileage blockers / clocking wasn't on the rise enough already!

That's too easy, they could never justify government crony charging £10bn for that.

I will sell them my idea for the bargain price of just £1bn.

It'll be for new cars - mine's 16 years old - don't care.

then it'll be for older cars - mine will be 20+ by then, so still don't care.

then it'll be my turn, I'm 48 I'll be dead by then and still not caring.

However, it makes sense really doesn't it.

Stop worrying about it!

Do you think your average man in the street would engage in a bit of tax evasion and risk a prison sentence, any more than people fiddle their self-assessment today?

It would need to know where you are. Presumably if you drove to (say) Germany the foreign mileage would be exempt?

If they bin car and fuel tax, and do pay per mile, that’s fine. The more you drive, the more you pay, which is sort of fair. But the implementation will be inept and staggeringly expensive, and they’ll probably leave the existing taxes in place.

It's the tracking that worries me most.
