Hi all, I am changing out the carpets in my car. The old carpet style is bound with leather edging, which I wish to replicate.

Having spoken to a couple of local trimmers they are all to busy with bigger jobs to be bothered with a few car mats. So I am going to have a crack myself. I have done a little trimming before, mostly just headlining and soft stuff that only needed cutting and glueing, but nothing stitched before!

Having watched hours of Youtube videos and now armed with a used semi industrial machine I'm ready to press on but am confused by thread sizes and weights.

I have 90/14 and 100/16 size leather needles. Bonded nylon or polyester seems to be recommended and the choice is 20s and 40s (not sure what that means really?). I'm wondering what will fit the needle eyes, won't cause snagging etc. Does anyone have any experience they can share?

If it makes a difference this is the style of edging that I'm trying to copy, a stitch, fold and blind stitch through the pile;

If all goes well I'd like to work up to some simple leather trimming like gear gaitors etc. but baby steps first!

Have a look here. When Wheeler Dealers did a Rover P5B, they replaced the carpets. Mockney Mike visited this company and saw them make a full carpet set in just the style you describe.

No connection/interest, just thought it might help.

“It’s wurth wot I’m askin all day long, but ‘old aaaaht yer hand my son, yer got yerself a craaackin deal.”

Can’t work out whether Mike ‘arfur daley’ act orTim Shaw’s ‘give us a discount’ comedy stylings are more irritating.
