I have had a few events booked this year which have been cancelled for the usual bullst reason, And I am getting sick to the back teeth of losing the booking fee, it is only a small amount each time, but it is the downright blatant theft that is getting right up my nose. If someone sneaked a fiver out my pocket when they though I wasn't looking I would be knocking their teeth out, but this is starting to feel the same way.
What recourse do I have to get booking fees back for cancelled events?
I have only had one booking fee refund out of a dozen cancelled events this year and I had to annoy the living soul of of a call centre several times a day until they were sick of the sound of my voice and caved in. Luckily I had plenty of driving time between jobs so did it on the hands free, but what is the law on these things and how do I go about pressuring them without spending as much time on it?

I’m guessing their argument would be you booked it and paid a fee to do so; whatever happens after that point is irrelevant as even if cancelled you did still have a booking.

It annoys me too.

Really annoys me all these "booking fees" "admin fees" , one company tried to charge a "postage fee" for a ticket that came via email then claimed it was for the admin of the email being sent.

pretty sure you have to take out their additional cancellation insurance to be within any chance of getting your fees back.

Look on the bright side they’re not charging a cancellation fee

I had 6 events that I was unable to go to this year - not bullst reasons, genuine, public health concerns.
However, of those 6 none of them were cancelled, simply postponed.

I guess as said above, they consider the booking fee paid to cover the booking at the time, which took place.

I had to cancel going to Gran Canaria in June, we changed the holiday date and the company were great. We were charged a little extra due to the dates we picked but otherwise no issues at all.

I suppose it comes down to when you booked. If you booked before lockdown plans were announced then you should receive a full refund in my eyes. If you booked after then you will have been aware there's a chance this could be cancelled. I'd look at the Ts and Cs of the bookings you made, it will most likely say in there whether you're entitled to a refund or not.

I nearly took the cancellation insurance for a concert as I saw next to the T&C read tick box there was a cancellation insurance tickbox and then in actually reading the T&Cs I read that the booking fee was non-refundable, unless you had cancellation insurance. However:
a) There were a number of very specific instances where the cancelation insurance would pay out, but most of the usual reasons you'd cancel (got Covid, Mother in Law coming to visit, cat has died, event has been cancelled by organiser) were not covered.
b) The cancellation insurance was non-refundable!
c) The cancellation insurance cost more than the booking fee!!!!!

Still a nice little earner from all those that don't read the T&Cs. Retailers name rhymes with BubSnub.

What’s the usual bullst reason?
