Hi All,

Does anyone successfully pivot bikes around on their side stand when moving them around the garage? What about larger/heavier bikes?

My Tiger is ~220kg and it would be handy if i could use this method to turn it around in the garage, but the flex on the side stand put me off the idea initially.

Not done it myself, but in a recent issue of Bike one of their guys was pictured doing just that with (I think) an Indian FTR1200, so would've thought it'd be fine with yours. Seems a bit sketchy/risky to me to be honest - perhaps get one of those "360" paddock stands that has castors on it instead?

I saw MOT guy do this to my 996. Asked him not to!

Crikey, that's ballsy of him.

In an answer to the OP I think if it's something robust - e.g. your Tiger, I wouldn't have any qualms about doing it. The lighter the bike and stand though the worse it could be.

I once broke a side-stand doing it frown

If the centre stand wasn't such a pig to use on my bike I would get one of them, its a nightmare, there is no grip on the pad that you put your foot on, especially with a bit of water about. Plus the bike seems to take a much greater force to get on the stand than other bikes I've had, I dropped it once where just at the point of weight transfer my foot slipped off and I basically just pushed it over.
As such, I never use the centre stand, and just paddock stand it instead if I need it upright.

EDIT- Just realised you meant a movable paddock stand, and not the centre stand turn table thing that i thought you meant. Does look like a good solution.

Thanks
Matt

Don’t try it with a new Triumph Rocket, the stand is bolted to the engine block ! Already a couple of reports of fractures on the FB group when I joined looking for info.

I think it very much depends on the bike and side stand!

I turn my Pan Euro on it no problem, and that is 30 years old and 317kg wet.

My mate asked me to show him ho to do it on his new S1000R and I refused.. didn't like the look of it at all.

If it's flexing I'd not do it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but a side stand is designed to take about, what a third of the weight of the bike? So you're asking three times that, and thats before any momentum.

Some are definitely over engineered to comfortably take that amount, I mean in relative terms bikes aren't heavy, but if I wasn't supremely confident I'd not do it.

I never even attempted it on my ADV bike. That weight was far too high up to be fking around. That said, I think the sidestand could have taken it, it was thick steel.

Yup - the one linked above, knew I'd seen it somewhere!
