Hi Chaps

Thinking I might upgrade the kids phones (mid A Level and GCSE respectively) for Xmas. They haven't asked and they won't but I know they'd appreciate it.

They currently have recycled 7+'s after years of "feature" phones. I'm an Android man so don't keep up with Apple releases really. I know they'd love the latest and greatest but they are sensible and would be happy with "better".

I'm happy to upgrade but would rather not over do it! Is the answer an 11, 12, a (new) SE or a an XR... or wait until spring when it's their birthdays and get the same for less £? What's the sensible option?

Unless they really need a better camera I can’t see what they’d gain from a newer handset.

That's pretty much what the lad has said... the battery on his phone is pretty much knackered but replacing that will be cheaper I suppose. Not much of a present though 😜

Suspect he'd be happy though!

Exactly I have a 6 & a 7. The 6s battery is fooked I'm just getting it replaced. Why spend hundreds on a new phone when 10s on a new battery does the trick?

All I'll say is - seems a good pair of kids you have.

Refreshing change from the chap who had to buy his son an Apple product because he "wouldn't accept Windows products".

Personally I would go with an 11 or XR if you dont want to fork out for current generation. Both are excellent and big step ups from 7's.

The new SE might be a good shout if they are comfortable with TouchID rather than FaceID and reduced screen real-estate %.

We have an old 6 as the spare phone, recently had the battery changed, £40.
I then needed to use it for a few days, couldn’t believe what a great phone it still is.

It won't be long before the 6 won't accept iOS upgrades, that for me, will be the time I need to upgrade my 6s+.

I'd echo the comments above about the XR or SE, probably the SE for longevity.

Better than my 11 year old nephew demanding/expecting a 12 mini for Christmas, when he already has an 8. The thing is, his dad will probably buy it too.
