Ebay – buyer damaged item and wants refund

Was after some help as the more reading I do them more screwed I think I am.
I recently sold a computer component on ebay and shipped it to the seller. Once it arrived it appears that it may have got very slightly damaged in the post. The buyer attempted to repair it but I believe that during the repair he may have caused a short breaking it. I have his emails explaining what he did. I do not believe the buyer was qualified to make the repair and should have returned the item to me straight away.
From what I can tell from ebay is that I must cover 2 x shipping plus I will be left with a broken item as I must refund him. Do I have any come back?
It seems to come down to my word vs his and ebay/paypal back the buyer every time. Not sold much on ebay before, don't think I will again unless I can afford to take the financial hit!

I sold a vintage watch, lots of description and its losing 2-3 mins over a day. The buyer took it all apart to try and fix it and when they couldn't wanted to return it to me.
I refused.
They raised a case in eBay, I countered that they weren't qualified to dismantle such an item and it was accurately described - they sided with me (I still ended up with negative feedback but that I can live with as it only lasts 12mths)

Unless you encouraged him to do otherwise he is wrong.
In the eyes of the law any damage must be reported to the vendor and the vendor take appropriate action. If he's tried to fix it without your say so then it's his problem.
Nothing you can do apart from go down the correct channels with Ebay/Paypal and let them decide.
