I'm sure this was discussed recently but can't find the thread.

B&Q are selling some portable a/c units for under £200. I want a portable one so that I can't take it up to the bedroom at night.

Has anyone got one of these and have any recommendations?

Did you mean "can" take it up to the bedroom?

If so, don't be fooled in to thinking that these units are truly "portable". Now, I'm a fairly big bloke but these things are really heavy and awkward. I shifted ours from downstairs to upstairs once... and then resloved to never move it from upstairs again!

Of course, if you live in a bungalow - it's OK because they are portable in the sense they have wheels.

Mrs Knee would have NO chance of moving it upstairs to down and vice versa.

Worked a treat though.

Edit: Ours cost around £300 and I think was 12,000BTU. I'm not sure whether this would affect the weight... also, if you get a condensor one, remember that it'll get a lot of water in it. That spills when you lift the unit!

Just whap your wad and have a multipoint split-system fitted!
Similar cost to having central heating installed, with similar improvements in comfort.

I have a Carrier split in my bungalow: the place is so small I had the indoor unit fitted in the hall and simply open and close the internal doors as required

Not QUITE as efficient as a unit in each room, but for the volume of this place it works quite well...

They are a sight better than nothing at all but they are compromised by shitty design, principally that they don't have a separate inlet duct for the condenser circuit and so suck hot air into the room from outside, see this rant.
Wedg1e's suggestion of a permanent system is definitely the best but the price might make you blink a bit.

Yes, they are not the sort of thing you want to lug up and down stairs. Mine is suspended on chains from the ceiling about 5 feet off the ground because there's no room for it on the floor. Getting it up there was interesting.

They all collect water because that's what happens when you cool humid air down. Mine has a hose attached to the drain to dump it out of the window. You can't really do that if it's on the floor so it has to drain into a tray, which has to be wide and shallow to fit under the outlet, so it tends to slop when you pick it up. The water is essentially distilled, so good for topping up car batteries and the like.

To add insult to injury, sometimes there is pigeon on the menu. Anyone who eats pigeon is a c**t. There isn't even enough meat on a pigeon for more than a couple of mouthfuls. For someone who is not starving, and has normal access to supplies of food, to deliberately choose to eat a pigeon, they must be (a) stupid and (b) a complete w*nker. They should be forced to eat the complete bird, including all the bones and feathers, then when the splinters of bone pierce the walls of their intestines leading to massive peritonitis, they should be denied any form of medical care. Let the f**kers die in agony, poncy posing scum.

Agree with all of the above. They weigh a ton and put out gallons of water. Usually all over the floor if you don't have the collection tray in exactly the right place. Also, I usually only need it about 30 days a year.

Still, damn good when it is necessary.

I'd have to agree with that, even though the pigeons that inhabit our garden could certainly provide more than a couple of mouthfuls. Mind you they sit under the birdfeeders all day waiting for the more athletic birds to shake some scraps down as they are simply too fat to fly.

Got mine from Homebase two years ago, vents through a hose much like a tumble dryer does.
Takes about an hour to pull a 17x12ft bedroom down from 30 to 20 C, so for me invaluable...

Has anyone got any examples of models for a few hundred, bought on the high street for example this year, that actually work really well? I was looking at the £150 in Homebase but didn't know how good it would be?

I got a 12k BTU one from homebase, Its mustard on a hot day. Got the hose out the window and the gap taped up with masking tape.
