a couple of nights ago i was driving in southborough/tunbridge wells in my yaris. i thought i was doing around 53mph, but my friend looked over at my speed and he thought it was around 46 mph... i was wondering what the penalty for either of these two speeds is, and as i've been driving for less than 2 years will i get my licence taken away? these may seem like pretty standard and boring questions to most of you, but i'm a little scared.. not jst of having my licence taken away but also of the implications in regards to my parents being a tad angry! thanks..

I thought the Yaris had a digital speedo?

If you're lucky there was no film in the camera, you have 14 days for them to send the ticket to find out. As for the penalty, you might be in for a court appearance depending on whether you or your friend are right.

Tell them you had a friend over from say Argentina and that as far as you were aware they were driving the car but you are not sure, but no doubt their excellent photographic evidence will be able to clarify this. Then give them a name and address from Argentina. Has worked in the past for a friend of mine a couple of years back when he got caught by a Gatso on the A303.

All you can really do is to wait and see whether you get a letter from those nice people at Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership. Don't foget that the letter will go to the Registered Keeper for the car, which may be you, your parents or whoever.

If received the letter may offer the ability to accept 3 points and a £60 fine, but if you were doing in excess of 50mph this is unlikely.

However it is possible that there was no film in the camera, and the Scamera Partnership have 14 days from the date of the offense to put the letter in the post first class. (they actually have 14 days from the day after the offence to notify you, but the last day would be taken by the post).

thank you so much to everyone for posting their replies... raged_out you have made me feel a whole lot better, even though i do realise it's all down to conditions at the time etc blah blah blah... have managed to stay out of the house since the incident, and am planning to go out tonight so that i do not see my parents! i know i'm delaying the inevitable b*llocking, but the next time i'll see them is on my 'prize day' i.e. graduation from school so hopefuly they won't be too mad with me!

too late, they already know... rookie mistake from me i'm thinking! aside from making me pay the fine myself i can't think of what they can do to me...unless they refuse to take me places, dammit.. ah well i guess that's what older sister's are for!

Is it your own car???

They could take it off you if it is. I don't think punishment is called for.

I think 3 points and £60 is a harsh enough punishment. I'm sure your parents have/do speed on occasions so it would be a little unfair to punish you just because you got caught. I bought a snooper a few days after I passed my test to stop this happening. I often drive on unfamiliar roads so its nice to have a bit of a warning.

Was it the one on the hill by the Cross Keys? A sneaky one that, wide road, downhill and all.

Keep your fingers crossed for 14 days and keep reading Pepipoo for all the info.

Good luck!

we have a few cars that my mum, dad, sister and i share..so i guess i'll just be not allowed to drive them - but that means that i'll be at home the whole time so they might rethink that after a while! i was heading up the hill out of twells so the camera was on the otherside of the road, i was the only car on the road though so there's no doubt the flashes were for me!why weren't more people on the road at 1 in the morning?! heading up that way again tonight, but the little b*stard won't get me this time!(hopefully anyhow!)

Hang on a goddarn minute.... A Gatso (Square lenses, not round) on the other side flashed you going towards it?

Fret not, nothing will come of it. End of. Gatso's only provide evidence going away from them. They only flash going towards them to scare people.
