Awful song in general. I would motion to remove it from the radio full stop.

The most interesting bit of the article is the explanation in 2007 of the BBC reversal of its decision to censor the song.

"Andy Parfitt, the station's controller at the time, explained the U-turn by saying its audiences were "smart enough to distinguish between maliciousness and creative freedom", and there was no "negative intent behind the use of the words".

I guess using the same argument, the audiences are no longer smart enough.

I thought it surfaced a few years (5? ish) back but for the last 2 or 3 years the normal version had been played
It's just the BBC worrying over something that most folk couldn't care less about

No it means someone else is controller now and sees it differently.

Do other radio stations play the original? Virgin, Capital, Radio X? I bet they haven't played the original for years.

Great Christmas Song, not my favourite but certainly in the top ten greatest.

People need to look beyond the casual insults to the underlying message.

Very sad if the "snowflake generation" cant take it.

The years start to blend in with one another once you reach a certain age but I am pretty sure I have heard the original version on the radio in the last four years.

What I really need to do is sort out a new media player and then buy all my favourites. I tend to drive back to my parents on Christmas day and radio 1 have been going down hill lately in their Christmas selection on early Christmas morning. Didn't have Mariah Carey "All i want for Christmas is you" once for example while they were playing some modern cr*p instead .

Given that Kirsty MacColl used a bowlderised version of the lyrics in TV performances in the 1990s, that Shane MacGowan has said that people who use the word in question are horrible and it's only in the lyrics because it's a fight between two broken people who are (in his words) "wkers", that Radio 2 will still be broadcasting the original version, and you can listen to the original version any time you like on YouTube or Spotify, I really don't see what the fuss is about.

Not sure it's a great Christmas song. It is a great song set at Christmas.

To me a Christmas song should be uplifting and happy. The song is about two sad people in a very strained relationship drinking too much at Christmas.

I’ve always liked the song, but never really seen it as a Christmas song for the same reasons as you say.
I suppose a lot of Christmas songs aren’t that Christmassy, stay another day comes straight to my head, or even Last Christmas, that one actually mentions Christmas though.

I really hope the "old generation" grow out of attributing any sympathetic change in the name of progressive sensibilities and a lot of other things they perceive to be negative to entire generations of people of whom they know very little.

Note the intentional irony.

This is about the unwillingness of large concerns to be seen to oppress a minority.

I'm not offended by the song nor by the decision by some radio stations to play a clean edit.

Basically as below;

Brilliant song.

BBC doing what it does best and assuming people care, then making them care one way or another.

If you listen to Radio 1, you're not going to be that interested in it anyway.

If you listen to Radio 2, you still get the correct one.

Again, non story, promoted by national media with nothing useful to broadcast.

It's in the same vain as Dr. Who, nothing wrong with Jodie just the stories are pointless propaganda and either audiences are too young to care (mine) or they simply don't watch any longer and find something else.

I'm sure they said the same about Cocaine Toothpaste and Hand Loom....

Move on!

I detest the song but don't think it should be censored in any way.

Saw this this morning. It is ad predictable as them playing the song its self now!

Part of me thinks it is surprising that slut (particularly) and faggot (more recently) were ever routinely played on the radio at any time of the day.

Part of me thinks it's a great song with a great story. If it wasn't a Christmas song then maybe people would be better able to get the sense that these are not nice people and it would be less of an issue.

Only if it takes “Stop the Cavalry” with it.
