Ok, so apparently Blair has given the number of illegal immigrants as around half a million in the uk (or less than 1% of the population). Given the current estimates of the cost of ID cards to 'solve' this problem, the government could offer each and every illegal immigrant ten thousand pounds to own up and leave the country. Then we just shut the doors.

Job done.

But seriously, a lot of them are here to escape poverty from their original countries, i imagine it is their intention to make a life here.

It is starting to amuse me now that all the previous statistics were unavaliable BEFORE the election but all seem to be creeping out now when its all too late. We have had so far, Hospitals, Traffic and now this. Whats next in the league?

Not really, our doors are already closed to illegal immigration in theory (obviously not doing a good job on the practice side).

P.S. I must point out for the humour impared that none of the above or the original post was serious. I was just interested in the numbers - from 300,000 to 500,000 estimated illegal immigrants gives some scale to the issue. The cost of ID cards equates to between 10K and 20K per illegal immigrant and gives us some idea of the scale of the 'solution'.

Quite a poor percentage really, does anyone know what the ratio is for the US ?

We don't even have land borders with any foreign country so one would assume it would be much more difficult to get here.

I would just like to point out that 500,000 illegal immigrants is a huge number!!!

FFS - the fact it is less than one percent of the population is immaterial - I should damn well hope that very few people are living here illegally with no ID, no (worthless) criminal checks, and probably driving with no licence or insurance.

But there are, according to Government figures, which are bound to be low, over half a MILLION such people here.

That is five cities larger than Cambridge, or put another way, Manchester.

All the illegal immigrants are going to have ID cards with the words "illegal immigrant" stamped on it. In the same way that terrorists are going to have "terrorist! FAO MI5" stamped on their ID cards. That way when the BiB stop them they'll be able to identify and remove said undesirables.... These clever politicians have thought of everything

500,000 is a huge number when you consider we are an island, which is hard to get to without going through a port of entry (i doubt they all swam over the channel).

Immigrants can come here because they have family here also (not all families are fixed to a single country).

I wonder how these ID cards are going to solve this, as the already illegal immigrant population can forge a birth certificate and then apply for an ID card, effectively granting themselves full citizenship.
