I like a beer or two and I drink a lot of bottled ales.

I've noticed that certain beers give me a monster headache. I'm talking a headache that comes on in 3-6 hours and won't shift with neurophen and it takes a whole day or two to clear!

This from 1 or 2 bottles...

The most recent culprit is Morland Crafty Hen. Its a strong beer but still only 6%. I can drink a bottle of wine or 6 pints of other beers no problem. But certain ales are leathal.

I assume there is some additive they put in that I'm allergic to?

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed extreme side effects from small quantities of certain drinks?

Yes, some particularly hoppy beers can make me feel properly miserable. I stick to the blonde beers now, or just a good quality lager now.

During the brewing of different beers, the process, the ingredients and the yeast produce different chemicals. Esters, phenols etc as well as the obvious alcohol.

May be that you are particularly sensitive to some of these?

Ales tend to have more of these byproducts than beer styles such as lagers which have cleaner fermentation profiles.

Crafty Hen lists Malted Barley as an allergen. Do any of the others that cause problems have any allergens listed?

Yes I also get this, doesn’t agree with me at all. That’s why I now drink lager.

Malted barely is the main constituent of most beers.

If I drink Gladness my nose catches fire and it ruins my night. Don’t get any reaction with other ales though.

Wold Top beers for me. Which is a pain in the rear, as the brewer is the friend of a friend.

I know they put various chemicals in to clear the beer, finings, originally isinglas from fish swim bladders!

No idea if this is the culprit either.

I might try another bottle of Craft Hen, just to see if it was a rough bottle...

Isinglass is still used though it isn't as common. Large scale breweries are likely to filter as it's packaged now rather that condition. Others use alternatives so they can stick a vegan label on the beer.

I don't know if it's just a tale, but a Scottish brewery started adding stuff to give you a hangover.

Apparently Scots equate a hangover with VFM.

That's mad! Surely an urban legend.

I'd equate getting really pissed quickly with VFM and no hangover!

TBH I would have to think twice about drinking another bottle of Crafty Hen even if it was free.... It made me feel that sh!t...

Some beer / cider gives me a kind of indigestion / stomach irritation. Starts within 5 mins of drinking and usually lasts about an hour. Champagne exactly the same.

However for example newcastle brown I am fine. Also Healeys cornish gold I am fine.

Wine is generally fine, as are all spirits even 151 Rum. Just some beers/ciders and champagne is pretty much instant. Cant be the carbonation as I can drink other fizzy drinks.

Been that was since a kid.

Did the same person also say anything about haggis hunting or a certain monster that lives in a loch?
