VW Golf ED35 Whirring Noise
Discussion
Good evening.
Sorry if this is in the wrong section but hoping someone can help.
Done nearly 1500 miles in a newly purchased Golf GTI ED35, 55000 miles, DSG. All good for the first 1000 but recently it’s developed a whirring noise that is annoying to say the least.
A local independent that I’ve used for a good few years has just had the car back in to replace the rear calliper and rear wheel bearing after they said that everything was fine on the initial health check. I’m loathed to go back to them as they have dropped the ball recently imo and this was the icing on the cake. I had mentioned the noise when I took it in initially so going back and being told these items needed replacing was a shock. They also didn’t fix the said noise.
Anyway, the noise. Driving above 40mph you can hear a whirring noise. It changes with wheel speed but not engine speed. Knocking it into neutral down a hill, the noise doesn’t change even though the revs drop from 2000 to 800rpm. This makes me think it’s something wheel related? I’m fairly certain it’s coming from the front somewhere and does sound like a noise you’d get from a worn wheel bearing but apparently these are all good.
Just had 2 brand new Pirelli P Zero’s fitted to the rear to rule these out as the garage had said the inner edges were slightly worn but the front PZero’s are 2000 miles old and like new.
Any thoughts from anybody? Or any recommendations for decent independent VW garages around Tamworth?
Thanks for your help.

not sure, but sounds wheel related to me too.
You can test for issues with front wheel bearings yourself
Cop hold of the top of the front wheel with two hands and pull it hard. It will likely not move, which means its OK.
Attempting to pull in a similar way on left & right sides of front wheel checks the Steering, same applies.
Also ensure that whatever slight suspension mis-alignment caused the wearing off of those rear tyres is rectified, else your new rubber will go the same way

Apparently they are good according to who/what test?I ask because with the car in the air & no load on them you can only feel free play & not necessarily wear until it gets really bad.
