New winter wheels fitted to the "118i"... you know, the debadged 5 door one with no fog lights and dual exhausts at the back.... would post in the sleeper thread but would probably cause a riot. wink

Wheels and tyres came from mrwinterwheels.co.uk after much humming and harring over various options, went there as they were the only ones that seemed to understand that I could fit 17's rather than insisting on 18's at greater expense. Came fitted including TPMS and balanced although pressures were a bit over the place. Interested to see how they perform, never bothered with winter wheels before but the last couple of winters have had hopeless moments and now her maj is using it to commute.

Quite good looking for their cheapest option. smile

Haven't seen them in the flesh yet, wheel refurbishers across the yard from her ladyship have just put them on, but they look alright, happy. smile

Went with Goodyear Ultra Grip Performance + as from the choice available they seemed the best option according to the ratings here: https://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/The-Best-Win...

Yeah I found that thread about an hour after I bought these.... found the recommendation for mrwinterwheels from a four year old thread using the search button, powered by google eh? rolleyes

I have exactly the same 18 inch Borbet rims as winters for my 440i (and on my previous 335i) with Goodyear Ultragrips, Tyreleader for the rims, Camskill for the tyres, they came in at just under £800.[url]

We were £915 including TPMS which I thought was fair. Having now seen the wheels I'm impressed, look forwards to seeing them in daylight. With the chunky tyres it really does look like a boggo family hatch which suits me fine. biggrin

Got the same style Borbet wheels but in 17 inch and black on my 430d. Also got them from Mrwinterwheels but 5 years ago.

Had an issue with the paint peeling on the inner hub on two of the wheels and they were replaced a couple of months ago, really impressed with the service. No connection to them, just a happy customer.

Worth registering the 5 year warranty if you haven’t already.

As you can see, the winter tyres grip really well (can’t get the photo right way up!!)

Winter tyres are well worth having on a RWD BMW - as I found out in 2010 when I was trying to use my 123d on summers. rolleyes

And was confirmed when I had my E91 on winters in 2018 when the Beast from the East arrived!

My latest daily is an E90 330i that came with horrible Style 158s but good Continental tyres, and another set of scuffed 158s with Hankook winters on them. But I've solved the looks for the summer with a set of Z4 290s. laugh

On my fourth BMW and have never fitter winter tyres - perhaps it's just cheaper and easier to adapt your driving style to the conditions...

Driving style will not help when traction is zero.

No, but the whole point of winter tyres is you are more likely to find some traction!

I couldn't believe how good my winters were when the Beast from the East arrived in 2018.

Agreed, when I had mine in 2010 I had great amusement overtaking 4x4s unable to get through the snow.

My last car, FWD Octavia vRS, on Nokian winters went up a snowy hill from a standing start where a BMW X5 & a Nissan SUV (both 4-wheel drive on summer tyres) failed with a run up.
I have used them for 4 winters & their grip is even noticably better on cold, wer roads.

I've never felt the need for winter tyres on previous cars but all previous RWD cars had LSD's so I blame the e-diff on the M135i. However I also suspect that summer tyres now are more summer biased than previous decades: when the Beast hit my car was laughably useless, I couldn't even maintain speed going up a small hill with a run at it and had to suffer the ignomy of schoolrun mums in their Jukes passing me as the car ground to a halt.

Some say "learn to drive to the conditions" I say I managed that perfectly well for the previous thirty years, I'm not dodery yet! Let's see how the car performs on winters.

I had no trouble on summers with the Beast from the East, or ‘gwynt traed y meirw’ in Welsh (wind of the feet of the dead, "the east wind", the direction people are traditonally buried). Then again, we are in the West and on the coast, so rain is the main issue, winter temperatures rarely drop below plus 3 degrees Celsius. Although my fall back is my wife’s Fabia on all-seasons.
