1440p ultrawide vs 4K
Discussion
I'm currently spec'ing my once in a decade PC upgrade which will also include a new monitor. The RX6800 GPU will be able to handle 4K so I'm trying to decide if I should get a 28" 4k monitor or 34" 1440p ultrawide. Has anyone compared both? I will mostly be using it for work along with CoD, Battlefield and CyberPunk etc for gaming.
If you’re limited to a small screen then I’d probably opt for the 1440. It’ll give you higher FPS than the 4K screen too.
I’m after a 6900XT but we still don’t know if it’ll compete with the 3080 or 3090 so undecided as yet.
If it doesn’t I may just settle with the PS5 when it turns up and keep my 2080Ti for another year.

Well considering the 6800XT is ±5% of the RTX3080 in a lot of games @ 4k (and in some cases beats the RTX3090) and spanks the RTX3080 in anything less than 4k, then I'd assume the 6900XT will spank the 3080 and easily match the 3090...and all for a bit more than the cost of a 3080 and a lot less than a 3090.I’m after a 6900XT but we still don’t know if it’ll compete with the 3080 or 3090 so undecided as yet.

However, all that goes out the window once you turn on all the fancy ray tracing on in Nvidia-optimised/sponsored games.
...and assuming you can actually get your hands on any of the premium cards this year.

The question should be.... how much do you want to spend?anonymous said:

I'd be looking at what refresh rate I could get for my budget. You get a good UW with 160hz which is excellent for gaming with a high end GPU. Not ridiculous budget either.

Thanks for the replies folks, the 49" super ultrawide is a real curveball which has been thrown - trying to justify it (tape measure will be out tonight).
Do you mean this one?https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/electriq-49-double...
The HZ is good but the 1080 isn't the best resolution.
I have this one (jeesh these links look long!) 120hz and 3440 x 1440. Works a treat.

Yeah, it's the Samsung CRG9, it's going to fit
That's a beast. 120hz is all good. Need a fine GPU to drive it that hard. 4ms g2g is a good response time.
Personally I would want G-synch for the type of games I play and the 2080ti nvidia gpu I currently have. You should consider if you are going to pair it with an AMD radeon GPU as freesynch works best with them.

I have the 32" Samsung G7 1440p. The 1000R curved screen takes a little getting used to.

Having just bought a 34" ultrawide and subsequently boxing it back up after 10 minutes and sending it back, I'd go for a normal aspect one.
It was too much like a letter box for my liking.
Interesting. I have 34" UW as well but because I wanted 240hz, I have a regular ratio 1080p monitor that is now my primary and the UW sits to the left. Whenever I watch a movie, I turn and face the UW and everything about it other than 240hz is better than the regular ratio. I love the aspect ratio. It is so expansive. Each to their own, but it doesn't feel like you gave it much of a chance if it was only 10 mins! :-)It was too much like a letter box for my liking.

I take the view with anything (anything at all) that if I don't like it from the off, then I never will.As soon as I took it out of the box I thought "I don't like this much". But I set it up, tried it and nope, I still did not like it. I'd not grasped just how tiny it would look next to my 32" QHD one. It was also curved, maybe that was a bad idea as well ?
I fired a game up and started uming and arging. Well, again, umming and arging just means I'm trying to convince myself it's okay, when it's not.
So back in the box and back it went. I replaced to it 2 more 32" QHD ones the same week (before I had 1 x 32 QHD and 2 x 27 HD).
I'm really pleased with my set up up now.
Snuffy: Well it sounds like it all worked out in the end!.
I went from a 60hz 40" 1080p led tv to a 34" UW 3440 1440 @120hz IPS panel.
When playing Pubg the extra resolution really sharpened things up, especially with how close I sit to the screen and the extra 60hz was just a total game changer for aiming. At the time that was all I was playing every night so for me it was an instant love affair haha.
