Dear All

I am seriously considering binning the A/C.

I have unbolted the compressor and am wondering how to 'de-gas' the system.

Anyone know how dodgy it can be ?

Not very if you loosen the fittings, step back and it’s diluted by about 2 billion gallons of atmosphere.

Whether that’s the “right” thing to do, or have it vacuumed out/contained is another question.

How anyone copes in a Cerb on a hot day without aircon is beyond me.

Don't do it Paul. Releasing refrigerant into the atmosphere is not only illegal (unlimited fine in UK) but utterly irresponsible too; I was told that 1kg has the same ozone depleting effect as 4000kg of CO2.
Any Aircon firm will come and capture the gas for a modest charge. This is commonly waived if you're having it regassed at a later date.

Since CO2 has virtually no effect on ozone that isn't really a relevant metric.

Thanks guys thumbup
Meanwhile, I have found that our local AA will come and de-gas it for me. woohoo

and, while on the subject, I had decided to replace the Compressor mounting plate to (in my small mind) retain the block rigidity.
So you can imagine how gutted I was to find that a previous service 'technician' had ripped the thread out of the block, on one of the mounting Allen screws and GLUED it back in place banghead

Hi William,

I picked my car up on Aug 20 2005 and drove the 550 miles back in the sunniest weather I can ever remember.
Didn't know enough about the car to turn the AirCon on so I just wound down the Windows.
It has been my solution ever since thumbupdrivingcloud9

Does anybody drive with the windows closed? Surely after decatting and buying a stainless exhaust you have to have the windows open to get your money’s worth.
