Has anyone else experienced their car slamming the brakes on when you’re reversing?

My 7 series will occasionally for no reason perform a full on emergency stop when I’m reversing. Nothing behind me or near and unprovoked throw the brakes on.

It’s pretty unnerving every time I reverse so have to do it super slow.

I’m wondering if it’s a dodgy Sensor or if there’s some dirt on it, but generally keep it clean.

Does anyone else experience it?

is it definitely the brakes or the park function on the box? I know on my 5 series the car will go into park if i reverse with the door open.

If definitely brakes, presumably something to do with anticollision, so a sensor associated with that. But, surprised it happens in reverse in that case.

My Golf will do it if you open the door while reversing as well. Maybe you have a dodgy door sensor?

It’s not telling me the door is open, the sensors will trigger for no reason then slam the brakes on. Just happened again before as I was reversing on the drive. The car waiting to pass must have thought I was a right noob

When I enabled the full set of nanny controls on my 840i GC, it wouldn’t let me reverse out of the garage without slamming on the brakes repeatedly. There was some reverse collision intervention (I can’t remember the exact name) which I had to disable in the iDrive before it stopped doing this.

I believe I pressed the Active Guard button to find and disable the feature, along with disabling the crazy lane assist function.

I have just taken a look at this feature on my 2020 840i with (iDrive 7) and how I disabled it.

Menu : Settings : Driver Assistance : Parking and Manoeuvring : Active PDC emergency intervention : Emergency braking at the back (uncheck box)

I imagine that you may have iDrive 6 rather than iDrive 7 on a 2018 7 Series, but I expect the above may still help you to find it.

Good luck!

Why they cant have a "kill nanny" or "hold my beer i got this" button for tight parking etc i'll never know. Could be a sort of trigger switch on the steering wheel.

Sounds an excellent idea. I just leave most of it turned off, but some of it I would use if it could be easily overridden.

Just had a look through and it’s exactly that, so I’ve unticked that box. Thanks for the help, much appreciated

If you press and hold the safety systems button it’s says everything is off. Did that and thought happy days. Then it still threw on the brakes and when I got back in, it had turned everything back on.
