Looking at a gaming monitor for my 13 year old son as is getting a PS5 shortly, and have a budget of around £400.

I've been looking on various websites and the Alienware 25" AW2521 seems to be well recommended as has a refresh rate of 240mhz.

Is this big enough though ? I also see Dell are doing deals on their curved 32" S3320DGF monitor which has a refresh rate of 165mhz.

Thoughts ....

I wouldn’t go for the Alienware, the ps5 can only hit 120fps at most and the monitor is only 1080p.

It really depends wether he wants high frames or high resolution as 4K high refresh rate monitors cost a bomb and ps5’s aren’t compatible with 1440p monitors.

Imo you might be better getting him a 4K tv that is more than 60hz, he’ll get high resolution and 60 FPS which is probably the best of both worlds for your budget

I think this is spot on.

For most people 4k and 60hz will be great for a console. It will have a wonderful resolution and picture and 60hz is seen as enough frames per second to enjoy really good gaming.

If you go for 1080p and get a monitor with really high frames per second, that more matters (in my experience) when you are playing first person shooters using a mouse and keyboard and are being super competitive.

Personally I have a 240hz 1080p alienware monitor and it is great for PubG on my PC and I do use it for my Ps4 and will use it for my Ps5 but I will miss out the wow factor of the 4k picture that the Ps5 experience is mainly designed around.

So, its 4k and 60hz and the best you can get for your budget. There are a few articles on the web that you can quickly find and search out on google.

Good luck.

I have this for work and console.
Set to RGB and set the colour space on the console to match and it’s brilliant. I personally use the low blue light mode on it’s lowest setting (normally don’t bother with this type of setting) and the bang for buck at £270 is great. There are better monitors for sure but you’ll pay a lot more for them.

This will do 4K and supports up to 75hz so will be fine. I didn’t bother with HDR at this price point. It’s not HDMI 2.1 either but I think for price point and use case this won’t be an issue.

It’s OOS at the moment but perhaps somewhere else has it?

"
Bottom Line

The LG 27UL500 is an excellent yet affordable 4K IPS monitor. Thanks to its smooth performance and immersive image quality, it’s awesome for gaming, work, and everything in-between."

I thought that read quite positive. Should do a good job.

The response time on that LG is 5 ms. I thought gaming monitors we’re supposed to be lower? I know nothing about this and I’m in a similar position to the OP.

Thanks for the responses. Think I'll hold off buying a monitor and just see how the PS5 performs on the various TV's we have around the house, and then potentially just get him another of those type, or let him have the best for his bedroom and replace that with a new one.

Mostly the figure you are given is the grey to grey response time. This means the pixel is already on showing something and then it has to show another state (IE a colour change or whatever). 5ms grey to grey. It is 8ms for actual response time which would mean from off to on.

For MANY a year we all competitively gamed on view sonic monitors and 5ms was seen as awesome.

I have a 1ms gaming monitor and I have a 4ms gaming monitor. Both tick the box for gaming with no issues. Unless you are some pro gamer, it will not make any difference at all.
