Discovery Sport or something else?

Hello

I’m looking for a car which is-

4WD
Big boot
Good head and leg room for my 6’5” husband
7 seats would be nice but not essential

I like Discovery Sports but is there anything else you would recommend? Budget is up to about £30k used.

I’m also nervous about buying diesel and whether the cost of driving in London is going to go up more at some point, even for newer diesels. I’d love an electric car but I can’t think of an electric car that meets my criteria above- am I missing something?

I’m 6’ 2” and on my second, first was a 2.0 diesel and although had no diesel related issues (they suffer from oil dilution due to need for using fuel to burn off exhaust soot) my second DS is a petrol. Have had no issues with either of my DS.

If you live in London and won’t be doing frequent long journeys over 40mph don’t buy a 2.0 DS diesel, get an older 2.2 diesel (older Euro5 not Euro6 engine) or a petrol one (if you can afford it) but you’ll be lucky to see over 25mpg with petrol in town. Or consider a new PHEV version, but they’re only really available new unless you can find one used.

Don’t believe all the naysayers on forums, they’ve sold thousands of these and relatively few have had issues, and most of those are due to the diesel diluting the engine oil issue.

If your regularly doing short journeys if your London based, get a petrol as the dpi filters in diesels need to get hot regularly ie need to be drivern above 40mph for at least 20 mins to get the dpf hot enough to burn the soot off.

Yes. 2017 XC90 T8 PHEV are on sale for around 30k. If you can charge at home, then short journeys are using electricity only.

If you're doing lots of short journeys then I'd take a look at these with an inspection you can get a Manufactuer AUC Warranty.

Everything listed fits my 6'7 frame comfortably but people in the rear suffer with the smaller SUV's.

Alternatively look at leasing the Disco sport Hybrid. At the moment they are around £500-£550 per month inc VAT.

Because they want one, in London with they're track width & extra height & London's speed humps they actually make sense.

My father bought a new one in 2017. Engine was out twice trying to solve the balancer shaft issue. Battery kept going flat. Aircon packed up. Rubbish dealers. Shocking vehicle, avoid. If you want a 4x4 (I’m struggling to see why you need one) that works, buy a Subaru Forester. If you don’t actually need a 4x4 that does the job, this won’t appeal in the slightest.

Adding to the toxic air how? With a Euro6 Diesel hybrid/Diesel/Petrol Hybrid or the Petrol options?

Also if your worried about London's air quality right now, then I suggest you get onto TFL about their Covid Closures that are now producing manufactured congestion & poorer air quality.

Because Euro 6 diesels are so horrifically dirty that they’re excluded from the ULEZ charge for being under the limit of what constitutes dirty

For the OP if I were spending £30k I’d probably try and go for either the full sized Disco with the V6 Diesel or an XC90 personally but if you like the Disco Sport then go for it.
