As a gaming novice, I am investigating the best kit for my 20-year-old daughter as a potential gift for her.

The new PS5 or build a gaming PC, what would you recommend these days?

Thanks.

You’ll be lucky to find a PS5 this side of Christmas unfortunately.

A half decent gaming PC is going to cost three times as much.

What’s your budget?

Do you know what games she likes playing. i.e. genres or some title examples?

I started as a PC gamer some 25 years ago, and its always been my main system, BUT i also have had every main console since the PS2 and enjoyed them all immensely.

The PC is good as she can use it for work\school\uni etc and if she prefers better graphics, a PC will offer better results .

If she has gaming friends, and they all have PS4/5 she may prefer that too, but with crossplay coming, its less of an issue in the future.

A PS5 or Xbox Series X gives you more bang for the buck at the moment (if you can source one at RRP). However, you are stuck with that spec for the next 6-7 years. At scalper prices though, you could get a pretty good PC straight off the bat.

A gaming PC on the other hand can be upgraded bit by bit over time as you can afford it and will ultimately blow these consoles away in terms of power as it is upgraded. How good it is/becomes depends on how much you want to spend.

As they are saying.

I have a PS4 Pro - bought it for £350, not spent another penny on it over the years.

I have a gaming pc. I have spent a good number of thousands of pounds on it over the years. The PC gaming thing is much more niche and is much hard to fund.

A PS5, if you can get one, or Xbox series x will give you MUCH more bang for your buck. Get a 4k 60hz tv to go with it and bobs your uncle, you are gaming at a high standard for the life of the console.

Like all the other advice, you need to work out what she has played on before and enjoyed and what games she wants to try or other stuff.

She can stream from the modern consoles with just the addition of the PS5 camera, so all in all, the console is by far the cheaper option.

Right now... no where first hand... seen people on the local Facebook getting them for like £450 and selling them for £800-900.

Gumtree or ebay. I would get the one with the disc drive as it means you can buy 2nd hand PS4 games from CEX and have a wide library to choose from for a much more reasonable price than £70 a game on the early PS5 releases.

You are looking at something like £800 to pick up a full media drive version of a PS5.

Alternatively, get a PS4 pro second hand and have some fun with it till early next year when you can buy a PS5 in the shops and just get your money back by re-selling your PS4 Pro. The PS4 titles you buy will play on the PS5 when you get it early next year. The PS4 pro at the ridiculously low prices you can get one from (£150 to £180 in boxed condition) is extreme bang for buck.
