I think they have 10 in active service, with other 20 ongoing refitting due to cancellation of the Gripen purchase program, that means that all of them are up in the UK?

Sounds like the perfect moment to invade Switzerland then biggrinbiggrin

I think Switzerland has a higher gun ownership ratio than the US.

No, not quite: they're third behind the USA & Yemen. The ration is roughly 1 gun per 4 citizens, the USA is in excess of 1 to 1. They have conscription, & tough rules on who can hold a gun licence. There are also strict controls on the type of gun, no automatics etc.

But they have compulsory military service and so have more than 5 mins training in using the guns they own - so unlike in the US or Yemen, there's a much better chance that getting shot at by a Swiss national may actually result in you getting shot !

I’d say a redneck with a few mags of 9mm would hit the target more often than a watchmaker with ten rounds locked up in a basement also containing nazi gold and artworks wink

Cool. I'll look fwd to them buzzing our house. NY Moors.

It'll make a change from Typhoons and F15s...although not seen a 15 in a while.

Had a brace of A400s over at very very low level last week. Was a great distraction whilst working at home.

Doesn't seem to be how it works, perhaps because training someone responsibly from an early age, & the administration getting & keeping a permit reduces the chances they'll use the weapon inappropriately. The list of prohibited weapons is considerably longer than those permitted, & there's a general distinction between those used for hunting, vs those used for personal injury. The risk of death or serious injury to another is remarkably low, whereas shooting accounts for around 20% of male suicide.

They were there last year, we were organising an event in Leeming Bar and they always seemed to take off at the exact time we didn't want them to! We were renting a cottage with a hot tub so in November it was great sitting in the hot tub watching the hawks coming in to land...

Indeed. I thought we were talking about the potential effectiveness of the Swiss population to bear arms and protect their country - not gun crime. Julius Caesar found out the hard way that they were quite good at that, and no-one has had a serious go at them since.

It did make me smile though that Switzerland has a declared QRA capability - but in true Swiss fashion only during working hours that that they publish !

True, I live only a few miles from the Swiss border and I remember some years ago 2 Typhoons scrambled to intercept a passenger aircraft who lost radio contact over Switzerland. It was out of office hours for the Swiss, so the Italians had to do it

There are lots of things to complain about in the UK right now - but things haven't yet got to the point that we have to outsource our air defence to Italy .....

Well, the written word is less effective than the spoken at conveying tone - I thought we were talking about FA-18s until Eric mentioned gun ownership wink

Just had a pair of them fly over our house, we are about 8 miles west of the air base.

Much noisier than the usual planes and going at some pace!

I saw 3 of the break over and land at leeming today as I was driving south. Brilliant to see and the timing couldn’t have been better! Nice to see a few hawks running about as well

Anyone know if there is a decent place near RAF Leeming to watch them take off and land?

We live near Masham and can hear them most evenings so wondered if it was worth nipping over to have a look.

You might be able to get a good spot from the services although I’m not sure
