I think Switzerland has a higher gun ownership ratio than the US.
No, not quite: they're third behind the USA & Yemen. The ration is roughly 1 gun per 4 citizens, the USA is in excess of 1 to 1. They have conscription, & tough rules on who can hold a gun licence. There are also strict controls on the type of gun, no automatics etc.Seight_Returns said:
But they have compulsory military service and so have more than 5 mins training in using the guns they own - so unlike the in US or Yemen, there's a much better chance that getting shot at by a Swiss national may actually result in you getting shot !
I’d say a redneck with a few mags of 9mm would hit the target more often than a watchmaker with ten rounds locked up in a basement also containing nazi gold and artworks

Doesn't seem to be how it works, perhaps because training someone responsibly from an early age, & the administration getting & keeping a permit reduces the chances they'll use the weapon inappropriately. The list of prohibited weapons is considerably longer than those permitted, & there's a general distinction between those used for hunting, vs those used for personal injury. The risk of death or serious injury to another is remarkably low, whereas shooting accounts for around 20% of male suicide.Edited by MarkwG on Wednesday 25th November 14:40

Indeed. I thought we were talking about the potential effectiveness of the Swiss population to bear arms and protect their country - not gun crime. Julius Caesar found out the hard way that they were quite good at that, and no-one has had a serious go at them since.Where's that parrot when you need it

It did make me smile though that Switzerland has a declared QRA capability - but in true Swiss fashion only during working hours that that they publish !

True, I live only a few miles from the Swiss border and I remember some years ago 2 Typhoons scrambled to intercept a passenger aircraft who lost radio contact over Switzerland. It was out of office hours for the Swiss, so the Italians had to do ithttp://www.defense-aerospace.com/articles-view/rel...
