The sign she has in the window reminds me of those stupid spam messages I see people posting on Facebook on the lines of 'We do not consent to Facebook charging us to use their service, repost this to everyone and you wont get charged'!

She wont be saying return to sender when the bailiffs come knocking.

The Instagram videos are good. At one point, talking to a council official through the letterbox, she says “You’re speaking to my fictitious character, I’m a living woman“. I’m not yet sure what she meant by that.

la Liga - Thats a pretty stty thing to call them a moron when they clearly are desperate and clutching at anything that may help them. They need to earn a living to live and would not be taking this sort of stand if it was not dire for them. At what stage when you view a "law" as unjust, wrong and immoral do you make a stand?

I hope the council lose in court.

If you owned that cafe/saloon that was forced to close what would you do? write to MP? protest? resist? fight? roll over?
ps
I see you change "moron" for "fool" and yes it may well be foolish but understandable I would suggest.

Yeah, moron was too strong.

The foolish aspect is not recognising the financial risk is much greater through punitive measurements than a loss of business over this month period.

Ok, fair enough falling foul of it once. But she's been fined four times now.

I'd weigh up that leaning on government support (I admit I don't know what that is as none of it applies to what I do) is better than subjecting myself to escalating fines.

They should have failed to control asbestos - they would have only been fined £2K

https://press.hse.gov.uk/2020/11/16/building-contr...

Life changing injuries after a fall - a fine of £1760

https://press.hse.gov.uk/2020/11/13/builder-fined-...

A catalogue of failings causing demolition rubble to fall on footway - 180 hours community service.

https://press.hse.gov.uk/2020/09/28/cornish-constr...

All of these failings had the potential to cause serious injury or death - £17K seems out of all proportion

Another idiot using Magna Carta again, I think that's the same printout the bookshop in Nottingham had printed out and got fined for. No doubt something that has been posted on Facebook.

Another small business most likely heading to the wall. It's ok calling her names and pouring scorn but I'd say her actions are borne out of sheer desperation rather than just some sort of legal naivity.

They are idiots for believing someone on Facebook about using the Magna Carta, if they opened their shop without that sign they'd still be fined but I wouldn't call them idiots. 1215 Magna Carta printout, yes.

Ps. The quoted Magna Carta of 10th June 1215 only lasted 3 months before it was rejected by King John.

From what I've heard from local people, business's paying rates got a ten grand payment. Or was it business's claiming rate relief?

Then got 80% of their average earnings from the last three submissions.

Does that sound right? Anyone?

Her shop is not far from me, she will definitely have got £10k as it will definitely be under the rateable value so she will claim business rates relief.

I know someone with a large business who was in financial trouble before Covid Kicked off. They employed around 60 people.

They're still going, so I can only presume they've had some serious government help.

My Business isn't large but it is a Ltd company and employs 5 people and the government support we have been able to access has been incredible to be honest, I appreciate not all businesses will have been able to get access to all the schemes.

I genuinely cannot take this "lockdown" seriously this time.

What is the point of keeping schools open but hair salons and barbers shops closed ? as the father of children i can tell you with certainty which of the two are dirtier and better at spreading illness.

I obeyed the first one, this second one is bullst, the peril is over.

To be fair we’re all just as moronic for letting uk gov respond so badly to this situation.

At least this person has some balls to do the right thing, rather than just follow rules.

Government have been known to be wrong before, hard to imagine I know hehe

That is right. However, I have a friend who owns a salon who is £66K down on takings in the last 8 months compared to 2019. Ltd company so no self-employed grant. (though the grant is only based on taxable profit so often not massive). Ongoing costs, rent, equipment lease, gas, electric, etc etc still need paying.

The current lockdown seems especially harsh for hair and beauty as it seems they have just closed hairdressers, pubs and clothes shops and called it a full lockdown!

I completely understand why this lady is frustrated and seemingly trying any 'trick in the book' to earn a living. She probably has already spent a fortune on screens, cleaning stuff and PPE and was closed again anyway!

the legislation itself is designed so the fine increases incrementally with each breach - I believe she has had 4 fines

if she goes to court then the court may do a lower fine
