Where do you consider north starts?

As per thread title.

For example, I live near Manchester, which is considered the north west, but if I lived in Northumberland I would consider it the midlands I think.

Same question with "the south"......

Anything North of Wickwar be full o' dragons.

Around Nottingham I think the north begins. I think the first proper northern city if going up the M1 is Sheffield. Doncaster if on A1.

I don’t venture onto the M6 so no comment on that side of the north.

If you lived in Northumberland, you would consider somewhere which is in the North West to be in the Midlands? OK.

Given Haltwhistle is the centre of the country, that makes Lancaster in the south.

And anything below Stonehaven is the south to me

If you look at the map, Manchester is lot closer to the middle of country than it is to the northern border.

North of what though? From a UK point of view the Manchester is certainly the midlands, the middle being somewhere around Lancaster. From an England point of view it's fair to call Manchester the North, maybe even Chester. I've known Londoners regard the North as anywhere north of Stafford and the Midlands as starting at Oxford.

Watford Gap is just south of here so folk lore says it's where the north starts, but nope, I'm in the bottom right corner of Warwickshire which is east or west Mids depending on who you ask.

I had this discussione with someone some time ago.

If you split england into 3 north to south Then the M62 corridor is in the norh midlands and not the North West.

But this is skewed a bit by fact NE england(Berwick) is quite a lot further north than far NW england (Carlisle)

My son, an Essex lad by birth, has 'emigrated' to Northumberland.

He once told me that people up there are mildly amused by talk of the Northern Powerhouse. If they venture as far as Manchester or Liverpool they refer to it as 'going to the South'.

I thought everyone knew it was Watford Gap and the line was not exactly horizontal. Essentially the Severn Wash Line.

Google maps has a funny ominous pause before it says "the north". (As in "Take the A123 junction to.... The North.")
