a bit niche, eGPU and AfterEffects.
Discussion
Hi guys and girls,
Long shot, but is anyone out there using an eGPU with Adobe AfterEffects?
Since i'm now permanently working from home, i'm trying to add on anything that will help with faster rendering.
Looking online, I can't get a real world opinion, it's mostly youtubers Final Cut exporting times and benchmarks.
Using a Macbook pro 2018, 2.6ghz i7, 16gb DDR4, Radeon Pro 560x 4GB intel UHD graphics 630 1536MB, 1TB ssd.
Any help appreciated.
All the best,
Mark

Haven't used AE for a long time and don't subscribe to Adobe Cloud and I tried to load the last standalone version on my new MacBook Pro M1 but it wouldn't install.
I had been looking a eGPU and a new intel Mac to get realtime 4k playback editing in Resolve, however the new M1 came out and took a chance on one instead of a new 27" iMac with 8gb gpu ram which would have cost £2299 but after watching reviews even that struggles with playback depending on file flavour. Then watch a few reviews on the M1s so took a chance with the bass model Pro and 4k playback is a doddle, even 8k if you turn down the res, which obviously still looks great on a 13" screen.
This just popped up which may be of interest comparing a lesser specced than yours 2018 intel with the an M1 Air. He does a render test at the end... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxsd-AQMjCw&li...
So, maybe you want to hold on for a more pro version of these M1 chip machines? A couple of points, this AE is running under Rosetta, so a native version should be better. These things run a lot cooler so fans hardly kick in (I believe most eGPUs run with fans). As yet, these new machines don't support eGPUs but maybe you won't need one?
Hope that is of interest.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I was looking at the black magic eGPU, go for about £400-£450 on eBay.
I know you can't upgrade the GFX card, but they run quiet and look the dogs!
Like you say, it would be a stop gap until the M1/2 chip MacBook pro comes out next year.
This is a works supplied new laptop, not that they are getting it back, so just looking to render out faster as I'm working on multiple GFX requests to tight deadlines daily and this seemed a cost effective option, unless work supply me with a Apple Silicon unit, this will have to do.
I just can't find a real world user of aftereffects using a eGPU.
How are you liking the new MacBook? That M1 chip is killing anything intel has to offer and uses no wattage and runs quiet, amazing.
Looks an amazing bit of kit, roll on next year for the pro models, hopefully they will have dedicated
Graphics chips or support eGPUs. Thanks again, will have a read of that link now, Mark (love the Griff by the way

No worries Mark
I'm sure the black magic eGPU will improve performance and render times with what you have and believe they run quieter than others. I'm sure you know there were two versions, so get the higher spec one if you can. I believe BM have now discontinued them.
I haven't seen any specific reviews about AE with eGPUs, as you say, a bit niche maybe. I'm more into editing and grading and not so much motion graphics these days. Always found AE clunky, to say the least, but now I have got my head around node based editing, might have a go at learning Fusion. Here's another video you might find interesting, comparing the Mac mini intel vs M1 mini and then adding an eGPU... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59gAjXT7qyw&li...
Loving the M1 MacBook but it is, for me, a leap into the future, so might have trouble running older software etc. I took a chance on it specifically for Resolve and couldn't be happier, although I suspect it will choke at some point. But then again, it's just a cheap portable and would expect to invest in something bigger as things develop. The nature of computing is that you get stuck in a period of compatible OS, hardware and software and I just run various Macs living in their own time zones... they all still work
