Well, 24 hours ago my dog fell ill, very suddenly and there was nothing the vet could do.
We got our first dog 16 years ago and had 3 for 10 years, then 2 and 1 and now none. Today has been one of the strangest days no dog to feed, no dog to walk or clean up for, water bowl just sitting there. Toys on the kitchen floor where they were left yesterday. Its like time has frozen. Not in work at the moment either so just very quiet in the house. Wasnt going to post anything, but this is pretty tough given everything else thats going on. Tomorrow at 0630 I would normally be getting up to sort the dog, first time pretty much in my adult life that I have not set my alarm clock. headache

So sorry to hear that, sat here in a suddenly dusty room.

It DOES get easier, it really does.

I’m so sorry, that is horrible.

I don’t think there’s anything I can say that would make you feel better, but I think I would go for a walk anyway. It’ll be less of a shock and give you chance to think about things.

What was his name? Post a picture up if you feel like it.

Sincere condolences, and if it’s any shred of comfort at all, many of us know exactly how you are feeling. It’s horrible.

Sorry to read this.

our last one went a similar way. Poorly in the morning and put to sleep by 4 the same day.

Post as much as you like on here. This section of PH is pretty empathetic.

Thanks chaps. Been a dog person all my life and had 3 of my own but I think thats it for me now. Going to have to hire a skip to clear the house out!! (jk)

She was fine on her evening walk and had been fine until this point - if anything a bit more full of beans than usual last night she was getting a bit slower in her older age, then came to put her to bed and I knew she was not right.

Took her straight to the vet as I thought it might be bloat but ruled that out straight away and she went down hill quite quickly in 10-15 mins so knew she was not walking out. Worst part was with all the covid they would not let my wife in with me so had to call her on the mobile she was upset as you would imagine also difficult to explain whats going on as the situation was changing. As it became clear things were not going to end well they finally let her in but she then had to come to terms with it pretty quickly and we had to make the decision to let her go. Sh*t all round situation tbh.

Sorting through her stuff today, thankfully most of it can go to friends who have dogs. Still not got it in me to take her water bowl up though.

Very sorry to hear your news. Both of mine have been very unwell this week, Monday morning they were both being sick everywhere. A scary day and I did wonder if it may be the last day! One day it will be, it’s a horrible thought.

So sorry to hear this Red_sir

My cocker spaniel is getting over an op this week (luxating patella) and I was beside myself whilst she was under the knife waiting to hear how the op went. It made me realise just how much she had come to mean to my family and me.

You have my deepest sympathies.

I disagree, it doesn't always, but getting another dog to plug the hole has always helped me, none ever replaced the foregoing, but they all brought smoething new and old. Couldn't stand the gap left by the unexpected departure of my last pal, so a new muppet arrived, same breed so different.
Sorry for the loss, no answer for it ever.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

I went through exactly the same a couple of years ago. My dog was fine during the day but by midnight she'd been put to sleep by the emergency vet. Nothing I could do, adjusting was very strange as it had been just me and her for 10 years.

I kept her last harness and a jumper my Mum had knitted her but gave the rest to a local dog charity.

It knocked the stuffing out of me for a while but felt stronger after 3 months, and missed the routine, so back to the Rescue Centre and got myself a new friend.

I get that completely. It's a very long time since I have been without a dog at all, but I'm sure I'd be the same. My previous GSD's collar has pride of place on the wall on it's own hook in my study, and her bowl is still in the cupboard, the current Herberts have their own.

What a beautiful dog, genuinely. Same as lots of us here I’ve had to make the decision to have my dog put down. Have to think what’s best for them not what’s best for us. I could write paragraphs but we all know what it’s like, impossible, in a word. As thevet says I’m not sure it does get easier sometimes, still bloody hurts getting on for 2 years later but now the happy memories are what I remember most. Sorry for your loss.

ETA, still got a bag of his toys upstairs that I can’t even consider throwing out. His collar and tags hang on my bedpost.

It’s a huge loss and there’s no shame in shedding lots of tears.

It took me a year or so to come to terms with losing my pal, he’d been with me as a single man and then well into married life. It’s been seven years and only now am I considering giving in to my family’s desire for another dog - it just doesn’t seem to feel right?!

That is a lovely photo.

I know you have had a bad year business wise and to have this on top seems really cruel.

Keep your chin up.

Good luck
