I have a few pics of varying sizes that need resizing for a website.

How do I resize to exact dimensions?

I will need to crop all of the pics, but when I try resizing it crops the pic anywhere but where I want it to!

It has to be simple . . . surely!

If you want exact size in pixels, try the following;
(based upon PS elements, rather than full PS but the commands should be roughly the same)

Select the crop tool and then in the boxes that appear at the top of the screen put in the width and height you want and the resolution the image is at. Then click and drag the crop tool and it will now only expand to the dimensions you have put in the box. Once you've dragged the crop window to the right size you can then use the hand grab tool and move the selection frame around the image to select excactly what you want.

Do you want to resize or crop? They're 2 different things...

I find the easiest way if I want to crop and resize for a website is to create a new image the exact size you want.

Resize the picture you are changing so that the shortest dimention is slightly larger than the target image.

Then simply drag the picture onto the new image and move it around to get the best crop. Then just go to save for web...

As always with p/shop there are many ways to do everything!

New image looks the way to go.

Crop method seems to measure in cm and only seems to offer that scale as opposed to size.

Ah! I can then resize it in image size.

Sounds like you were using canvas size instead of image size...?

When you are using the crop tool you can decide which units you want to use by changing the suffix eg

700 px for pixels
700 cm for centermetres
700 in for inches
