Base 2.0 vs 2.5 S
Discussion
Firstly, let me start off this thread by saying I've no desire to own the 4.0, magnificent engine though it may be. I'm a massive turbo torque fan, and based on what I've heard, I think the "sound" argument is also massively overblown. But please let's not get into all that again.
All that said, it does seem to me there could now be some excellent deals going on the turbos. Plus @£70 grand plus options for the GTS is, <ahem>, great marketing. It is also above my budget. As I'm also looking for something newer, say no older than three years I think the turbos could be a great bargain for such a performance car.
So onto my question. What are your views on the 2.0 vs 2.5 ? I've heard some of the the 2.5 S's can have cooling issues when tracked, but otherwise the reliability of both engines seems good.
Is there much difference in power between them ? Anyone reject one in favour of the other, and if so what were your reasons?
Thanks for any advice.

My wife has got a 2.0 Boxster which I drive every now and again. It's plenty quick enough for blasts down country lanes and B roads and the chassis could definitely handle more. Personally I wouldn't think of tracking either a 2.0 or a 2.5 as I think they'd feel a bit gutless after a while. One thing I will say is that with the PDK gearbox the car will look for a high gear because of emissions so you almost need to be driving it "on the paddles" to keep the engine in the right rev range. My wife's car is a 67 reg...we had a loan car from the OPC of an almost identical car when our Macan Turbo was in for a service....it was a later car with GPF which was noticeably quieter but also the gearbox seemed to have an even greater leaning to being in a high gear. I thought my wife's car was better to drive because of that.
We got a 2.0 PDK Boxster late last year and so far its been brilliant. Overall its got more than enough poke for driving on public roads and is very easy to drive fast or slow. We took it for a trip down to Western France in the summer and really enjoyed it, brilliant fun on twisty RNs and back roads and extremely comfortable cruising the Autoroutes.
I've not driven a 2.5 but I would imagine its probably the same but more. Having said that I came to the conclusion that buying more power doesn't necessarily translate to more enjoyment (unless you track the car) as these days the road conditions and many other road users in this country simply do not accommodate the desire of the average Porsche driver to press on.
I also like the slug of torque the car delivers and really like the growl from the exhaust even though its a bit mute even with PSE on (as mentioned above) in the later cars because of GPF.
Overall they are great cars and great fun when the opportunities allow them to be exploited so good luck with your search.

A number of 718 owners I know go on regular Sunday morning blasts and we have a combination of Ts, GTS and S cars and there is pretty much no difference in performance on public roads. The biggest difference will be the driver themselves. The base car is plenty quick enough as I have had a number of them following me in my S no problem
I had a base 718 Cayman for two years, it was really good fun, I enjoyed it and plenty fast enough on the roads. I got a GT4 for track work.
Sound didn't bother me at all, I was raised on turbos
and it never felt lacking on the road, I had some great times in that car. It's for sale over in Baytree if you're interested, well looked after

I've had a 2.7 and the 2.0, not driven a 2.5.
I far prefer the 2.0 engine vs my old 2.7, it works so well with the PDK and is just so much quicker with really noticable acceleration. Torque difference is really so dramatic and one of the reasons I changed, it's great having that level of power available from the lower rev band. The 2.7 had a horrible flat spot across the mid rev range.
I actually think the 2.0 sounds actually better than the 2.7 as well.
