Apologies in advance if this has been covered elsewhere! Anybody know how AD prices compare over there generally, I’ve heard you can haggle. Also what is the tax situation over there and when coming back if you follow the rules?

Main issue at the moment is the exchange rate, under 5 is punishing when buying in pounds.

What you looking for?

Keep an eye on the exchange rate, the AED is pegged to the USD and hence the pound performance vs the dollar has a major impact.

I’ve bought both IWC and Tag in Dubai and both haggled, the Tag was almost 45% off if I remember correctly. The IWC less so but still a decent reduction. Omega also haggled but I found it cheaper to buy in central London and claim the VAT back (a few years ago, exchange rate was favourable, I was living in Dubai and hence did the opposite of what you plan).

I didn’t see dxbtiger’s response before I typed the above ... at least we say the same thing.

As a tourist you can claim the 5% VAT back as you leave the UAE ... I guess you probably should declare your purchase and pay tax as you enter the UK!

Thanks for the replies. Considering a holiday and was wondering how it would compare to buy a watch over there cost wise if they had any pieces available that are harder to find in UK

As expected then :-( I’ve heard the waiting lists are shorter than UK - fake news?

Honestly don't know, I have very little interest in Rolex, the AD has been stringing my mate along for over a year for a no date Sub.

Safe to say you won't be buying one on a trip here, that I can be certain of.

There’s a guy on YT who documents his watch buying experiences over there, I think.

It’s a global issue, there’s not a place on the planet where you can walk in and buy a Rolex sports model. There might be a place in the old gold souk where you can, but it’ll several times retail price. I think the Dubai expats latest video was in Mirdif City Centre. I’ve stopped watching his videos, it’s just making content now for contents sake to boost YouTube viewings/ earnings. I was fortunate to get my submariner in jumeirah beach hotel in 2017 for AED 24k. After that the issues started with supply.

This.

If there was somewhere that had sports models in stock to buy, people would be jumping on planes and buying the entire stock in one go.

I've bought a few recently but same waiting lists. My sub took around 9 months. The Explorer 1 around 5 months. I also picked up an Omega Speedmaster 50th Anniversary which took around 6 months.

The only watch i managed to walk up and buy is arguably my favourite. This was purchased at a small rolex boutique in the Atlantis Hotel.

What a nice watch, the nicest of all YMs.

Let other chase the obvious choices.
