Very nice.

Not sure on your dates though - I have had 2 of the 'second SEs' with the different wheels, and both of those were registered in 1992.

K31 WBU & K224 LVG were mine.

Are you sure about the wheel not being original? Both of mine had Momo wheels which were part of the kit - though not the one you have.

The 93 car like the one I had, came with the 7 spoked wheels like this:

Could have been the change over after August as the i did see a J registered SE as well somewhere

I don’t think the steering wheel is original as the wood is darker than the gear knob and handbrake. Only going by my previous car, but the wheel wasn’t as ‘heavy’ as the current one, or with the leather bits. Could be wrong though as there are so few to check against

The first one I had about 10 years ago...

... and the second one, about 5 years ago!

Though those alloys have a very strange tyre size which is difficult to get hold of - Pirelli are the only manufacture now.

Imagine you had the same wheel I had in that case.

Enjoy it - I only got rid of mine because of the ULEZ. I miss it's nimbleness in comparison to my 350Z!

Very nice.

Have you had a look in the rear sills?

Mine were done in 2016 and if you see my thread it's not very pretty inside although it's perfect on the outside.

Get a endoscope from Amazon and have a look inside.

Looks great ! I am fond of these after buying an ex a nice, low miles, green S reg 1.6 car and clocking up a few miles in it.

But, they Rot spectacularly, like most Jap cars, they weren’t built for a British winter. Spent hours Waxoyling the under side of it, to try to slow down the Roy.
Get it up on a ramp and check the underneath.

It would have had a wheel like this, I should think:

They seem to fetch a pretty penny these days! Lovely wheel though - I thought it would be quite chintzy until I saw and used one in person.

Last MOT passed with flying colours, not even any advisories so think I’m currently ok for sills, but will be checking the underside and putting some protection on as much as I can reach
Well this is my drivers side sill as you have seen.....

And the outside is perfect looking. No bubbles, no blemishes at all.

And MOT for the last 3 years means nothing when it comes to the inside.....

I see you are in Hampshire, I’m just over the border in Camberley if you want to borrow my endoscope.

Better sooner than later!

Nice car!

The best Mk1's for me though, and possibly one of the rarest too, are the VR Limited, combination A ( burgundy ) and combination B ( green ) . I have two friends who have a mint bog standard one of each. Only around 1,000 made in total between the two colours and came with all the good bits.

Yours looks super clean though

This is why I didn't buy an MX5!

But if it looks like this, costs peanuts and is such a thrill to drive then a wee bit of rust is fine.....

Look great, drive better, but wouldn't trust myself to buy a clean one!

Problem is rust seems to never be just a wee bit!

Wow, that’s my old car ! My brother just emailed me this thread ! I was the second owner and kept it for eight great years.I replaced the shocks with Koni’s,fitted updated anti roll bars and a new Magnex ss exhaust.I fitted all the stereo and the Momo leather/wood steering wheel. It was such a great car that myself and girl friend (now wife) really loved. We had great holidays to Wales & weekend trips in it etc ,so it’s sadly missed ! It had no rust issues when I sold it at 70k odd miles.I even remember hand polishing the cam cover.Let me know if you need and advise, as only too pleased to help. PS, the guy I sold it to loved the car also and had many trips to France in it.He actually phoned me up seven years after I sold it to him to say what a great car I had sold him and kept thanking me.It’s been great to catch up with SAD and know she’s still going strong.Look after her she has some tales to tell “

My mother has a Dakar on a P plate that she's owned from new.
I think it's on about 45,000 miles and really only comes out from the garage in the dry.

I've told her I want first dibs on it. Last I checked there were only 100 odd on the road.

£5k value if it isn't ridden with rust ?????

I have a spec b its my little future investment pot only paid £1600 for it 6 years ago. Hasn't been used for a while but will have a full suspension refurb over the winter as its all original and will get it out next year/ Hppefully get to go to shows and events if we are allowed by then.

Its not the rarest though by any stretch but there isn't many on the uk roads.

Close there are a few other single digit built specials imports usually the m2 version 1001, 1028 being a street legal race car are rarest mkx5 and the most valuable. You also have the mk2 coupe in various versions and the most sort after rs limited. The lemans edition was a joint build with bbr only 10-12 were actually sold in the mazda racing livery the last few were painted black just too sell them as nobody really wanted them.
One sold recently that needed complete restoration for well over 10k.
The only time you see one is on a owners club show/rally ive not actually seen one actually on the road.

That’s good to know - Ithink I’m now the 6th owner and the car is on 112k. The guy I bought it from had 3 SE’s and this was the last he sold. The body has a few dinks on it now, but it is 28 years old. A good deep polish and some TLC will help. All the sills were done in 2017 when it failed an MOT.
So you were the one who managed to fit the 6x9’s in he rear then? Was driving back thinking that I don’t remember speaks being in the back in my last car!

That also now explains the raspy exhaust! It still goes well you’ll be please to hear.

I do plan on swapping to a mohair hood and glass if I can find a reasonably priced one
Yes I remember it was quite hard to fit the 6x9’s into the rear shelf. I also fitted the air horn near the front radiator and quite often the terminals to the compressor would corrode and need cleaning.I hope you get as much fun out of the car as I did.
