Sad news breaking this morning from the world of TV and films.... Dave Prowse has died.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-5511...

Hadn't realised that he went for the Chewbacca role as well and didn't know the fact about his accent not being suitable for the DV role.

Rest in peace, big man!

I am surprised that he survived this long. Towards the end of his days as the Green Cross Code man, he had to have a platform behind him to support the child ostensibly supported on his shoulder. His body had been quite badly hammered as a result of years of lifting weights and he couldn't support the weight by himself.

He also had to abandon hopes of being a top bodybuilder, due to damaged feet from having polio as a child.

He promoted a ketogenic eating style years before Atkins popularised it.

He was apparently not at all happy about the deep and booming overdubbing of his Bristolian vernacular.

But he was a hard working one-off and another part of my youth gone. May he rest in peace.

Because Vader wandering saying "Or-roight me ole mucker?" and "Gert lush!" would have worked so well. hehe

Schwarzenegger had exactly the same problem in German. Dubbed using voice actors.

RIP Dave.

He's met his destiny frown

Can't believe how old those films are and how timeless they still seem.

As a kid from that era I still watch them every single time they're on and never get bored of them.

RIP Dave.

One of the funniest things I heard was on R4 where they dubbed Vaders Lines back to Bristolian. I was driving and had to pull over I was laughing so hard.

I met him once when he was famous of sorts as the Green X Code man. Seemed like a genuinely pleasant chap. The accent was overwelminhg though.

He'd been involved in an RTA in the City of London during which a car ran over a PC, breaking both the PC's legs. I'm unaware of his/any culpability. He was in the waiting area in casualty and was concerned about his audience and that if it got out about the accident it would somehow negate the message.

Star wars came out that year (I think) but I didn't connect the two roles for years.

I used to train at his brother's gym, he was very broad too. Really looked up to his big brother.

I met him a few times many years ago when I worked at hotel near to the NEC that a lot of them stayed at for the various fan conventions.

He was a nice and friendly chap. One time he was there I had to help him get some stuff out of his car. It was 90s vintage Mercedes CL500 that I commented on being a nice car and he said he had bought it off Kenny Baker and pointed out the strap on the boot lid that was installed so Kenny could shut it. Boot was literally full of thousands of cards to sign for fans at those conventions.

A few years a go he did a book signing tour at Waterstones. I was his driver/organiser. He was a very generous man that made time for people, considering he was never seen or heard in the starwars films he was incredibly popular. Queues out the door, selling out of books popular signing autographs..
R.i.p Dave.

RIP, but, a confession, I preferred Tufty the Squirrel as road safety guru.

I respect your opinion BV , but you're wrong on this.

Where I live, regularly see squirrels running across the roads without even looking, but I've never seen the green cross code man do it.

Therefore, Green Cross Code man wins

Tufty was a nice, well behaved, red squirrel - not one of those hooligan, out of control greys.

No need to dub.

I was a kid in that era too, long with the rest of the kids in my street. One of those kids is now a VFX art director at ILM and has worked on 3 of the recent Star Wars films smile
