Morning all. I currently have a Toyota Hilux Invincible manual with 140k on the clock, which is used as my work vehicle and daily driver. I am looking to change it as it still has reasonable resale value but I also find that I would prefer an auto gearbox for towing. So, I have narrowed my choice down to another Hilux, an Isuzu D-Max or Nissan Navara. It will be a second hand vehicle up to £20k. Both the Isuzu and Toyota are well proven work horses, but the Navara seems to be used less on this front. I have joined the relevant owner's forums on Facebook but you are always going to get a biased opinion against the other brand. So, does anyone have any experience of the 2016 on Hilux, Isuzu or Navara please? Cheers!

stay away from the nissan, would the fiat fullback (mitsubishi) be worth a look?

I had the same query and ended up with the Navara. It was the cheapest, most powerful, most well equipped and most comfortable

The 3.2 Ranger Wildtrack they're a very good well appointed truck & the extra torque will make itself felt when towing.

What in particular is against the Nissan? I know that there was a chassis issue until about 2009 or so, but I understand that this has all been sorted now. There isn't much in it all price wise, I just need a good reliable work hourse. The VW Amarok is good, but as I understand lacks a low range gearbox which I do need,

Cheers for the suggestions. Some great trucks there. There is something making me hold back on the Fords, probably incorrectly though, as they are the best selling truck in the UK.

I currently have a Nissan although friends have your other options.

Isuzu and Toyota are within half an hour, Nissan is an hour away. It is such a tough choice!! The Nissan certainly seems to be the nicest place to sit and drive from. How long have you had your Nissan?

The 2016 on Hilux is a great truck. I've only had mine since Feb but the very comprehensive service history shows it's had nothing but routine servicing over 4 years and 55k miles.

My neighbour has a 3.2 Ranger and he put me off, has been back to the dealer with multiple issues.

My hilux is a base farmer/UN spec Active manual and is all the better for it I think. It's just at home towing a 3.5T ifor around as it is cruising at 80 on the motorway. Even at speed it's quiet and comfortable and is averaging 35mpg.

The 2.4 I would describe as fine, it feels torquey and strong from low revs but has very little top end so no point taking it over 3k revs. I haven't driven one but can see a heavily laden auto holding the gears too long and making a lot of noise for no benefit so definitely worth a good test drive.

There are usually some hefty discounts available new if you could stretch to the newly released 2.8? With the strength of the secondhand values my next truck will almost certainly be new.

The Ford is a good truck & imo a better one than the Navara but we are talking small margins all of the trucks on your list are good but for me the Fords 3.2 with good spec makes it the pick.

My mate has a 2017 Navara which he has put over 100k miles on. I don't think he's had any issues in this time apart from a couple of bulbs needing changing and tyres.

I've been in it a few times, quite a comfortable drive with heated seats and decent sound system.

Yeah, to my mind there's a lot of unnecessary crap on higher spec models. My active has AC, cruise, Bluetooth and not a lot else! It seems to drive better too on the 17 inch steelies.

It does have the different power modes but all they do is change the mapping of the throttle pedal so don't actually make it any faster or more economical. Power makes it quite difficult to drive smoothly whilst Eco makes it feel like it's broken so mine just stays in normal!

I have a D-Max, 2016 model. This works for me, the interior is not as upmarket as some other pickups, but it has not been a problem, and I've driven it down to Switzerland comfortably.

Have done 40,000 miles, average around 32mpg

Dealers have been great - is has had a couple of issues but these have been fixed without any quibble

Has the 2.5 engine which tows very well ( I have heard that the newer 1.9 can struggle at the full 3.5 ton towing capacity)

It does have the advantage of being cheaper than most of the competition, but mine still has aircon, cruise, rear camera and the upgraded Pioneer stereo with Apple / Android connectivity

Ranger - put off by knowing someone who had one, and it taking Ford 5 weeks to replace the gearbox, and the very harsh ride when I test drove one
Navara - Reliability reputation, not sure if the newer ones are better
Hilux - Dealers were not interested in selling me one, so gave up on them
VW, too expensive and only available in a double cab
Mitsubishi - don't like the styling - shallow I know :-)

I'd say don't dismiss the L200, it's the only one (apart from the Amarok) that can run in 4WD on tarmac, which is great when towing.

Really like the look of your Hilux, looks proper! There are a good few on eBay at the moment that are in budget and with low enough miles but they are all manual gearbox annoyingly.
