Cars to get enviro-stickers

Fuel-efficiency labels to be worn on your windscreen

Black label car?
Black label car?
It's a green day today. From today, people buying a new car will be able to tell how environmentally friendly a vehicle is as new colour coded labels start to appear in car showrooms.

The fuel efficiency labels -- announced by Government transport supreme Alistair Darling earlier this year -- are similar to those currently displayed on fridges and other white goods. They help get a variety of information across to consumers, such as how fuel efficient a particular vehicle is, how much motorists can expect to pay in fuel bills, and whether it qualifies for a reduction in Vehicle Excise Duty.

What the label does not purport to show is how much energy was consumed making the car, or shipping it from country of origin to the dealers' showrooms -- all factors in the environmental impact equation.

Showrooms in Guildford were first to display the labels, and Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman was in the area yesterday to see the first ones on display. He said, "Consumers will now be in a better position to consider the environmental impacts of different cars and to make an informed decision on which one to choose.

Motorists can make a real difference to the environment as well as to their pockets by choosing the cleanest, most fuel efficient models. I would urge anyone thinking of buying a new car to watch out for the labels -- coming to your local showroom soon."

All major car brands in the UK have signed up to the introduction of the voluntary labelling scheme. The label is due to appear in all UK car showrooms by 1 September.

So, better start knitting those black PH labels for our cars, then...

the sticker probably has a tracker in it.....

BTW article in Guardian moaning about UK record on CO2 says emissions increased last year "mainly due to increased driving"

Na, it just makes it easier for us to pick the most poluting ones.

Though, aren't I right in thinking the more higher performance cars are less poluting then the basic models/shopping trollies??

Does that mean we can have a go at the lentilists for a change....

They'll probably start supplying the plod with portable emissions testers. Testing you at the roadside and fine you if your vehicle doesn't meet the 'standard' defined by your 'label'.

so its a colour code system. who in there right mind would go into a car dealer, and choose a car on the basis of what pissing sticker it had on the windscreen.

surely they arent going to have every different engine variety of the specific model in the showroom?

oooh i like the one with the blue sticker lets get that one!!!

for gods sake

dont suppose the sticker has to stay on once its in your hands?

I am not a label, I'm a free man.

But for how much longer?

I don't see why you are all so worked up on this one, It is just a label to show how efficient the car is, and with the mentality of the average pistonhead subscriber most of you would be quite proud of a large visible label to state what a gas guzzling monster you are man or woman enough to almost tame, I on the other hand love the planet and its many flora and fauna, and place sustainable living at the top of my agenda, (by the way there is a nice black Tuscan that John at Racing Green was going to take in as a part ex, efficiency ratings anyone? before I go and check her out?) listen to the gentle sound of principles crumbling away, On a serious note though, it is one of the reasons I would consider going for an Elise, I just think there should be evening classes in how to make the most of your luggage storage areas!

On aother note with green activists starting to lay into 4WD owners and manufacturers and maybe about to target performance cars in general,is it possible that by having a certain label on our cars we could be targeted by people with limited knowledge or understanding of their heartfelt causes? I do have some sympathies for some of their ideals but I can see the potential for individuals getting carried away in an over zealous manner

It's an EU thing. The Dutch have had it for years. All it really does is group emmissions data and show it as a pretty picture.
