Interesting.

It is definitely defective. Shame you need to do without it for so long whilst it does a return trip to sony but that is the reality I guess. They need time to assess the machine.

I'd send a comment to TronicsFix on youtube with a link to your video. He has already done a complete tear down and is a specialist repair guy. He would be able to give some high level guidance.

Thank you for your reply. There is quite a few on there. I have raised a ticket to Game and see what they say.

Would it be better to contact Sony?

FYI, that isn’t my video in the link.

Personally I see a couple of options.

1. The internet shows you an easy way to fix this issue. SOmeone like TronicsFix puts up a video and it really is easy to do yourself without voiding warranty.

2. You raise a service ticket and get it sent back to sony. Yes you can speak to Game but I expect they will ask you to speak to Sony. The only question on this second option is if you find a way to play with the console laying flat so the noise doesn't annoy you and that buys time till more stock is available for an easier replacement or for the fix to become more common knowledge.

I think like all products the manufacturer needs to see it to be able to do something about it. I don't think the console will go away from you for 3 weeks and then return unfixed. I am pretty confident they won't think that noise is acceptable. It has clearly got an issue. No matter how small

Thank you for your reply.

I go to the PlayStation site to repair and you go through a couple questions and it says loud noise is normal from
The drive.

I shall ring them later to see what they say.

I think that might be the sticker getting caught in the fan issue, it's happened to quite a few people.

Does it happen if you lie it horizontally?

You could try putting a mouse mat or something underneath to dampen the sound but I'm guessing it will need to go back for repair in the long run.

It’s not the fan sticker issue, it’s super quiet other than when a disc gets inserted and the noise is while it’s spinning up.

There is no reason to accept a noisy disc drive. It is an engineering/design problem that has been solved years ago and that sound in the video shows something is wrong. No way Sony would accept a drive that sounds like that when they were doing their demo on stage/reveal. I'd definitely be returning mine for that, or being all brave and looking to fix it myself.

No I am not accepting that it’s normal at all. I will have to ring them as I cannot proceed further going through the website.

As you I am not going to open it up and start repairing, should t have to and I wouldn’t know where to start.

Ah ok, just saw this video of it too

https://youtu.be/-nOnF-N5ti4

There's a comment on there from some guy called Adam Neperty who seems to have fixed his by tightening some screws, maybe something to try first.

Ok boys. I think I got a fix. Mine does the same. Take both panels off. Put Ps5 vertically on a stand and start it up with a disc inside. While it's loading look at the 4 screws located at the bottom of the blue ray drive with rubber grommets underneath them. When you load the game and get that weird sound gently start pressing these screws with your fingers one by one and try to locate the culprit. What I did on mine was loosen all of them ever so slighlty like half a turn or so, and I'm testing this now. So far I can't reproduce the noise. I'm gonna give it few more tries. And will report back.

Ok guys.Today I took the panels off and unscrewed fan to see If i have that sticker problem.I do not. However I have noticed one of the screws holding the black panel with the fins for ventilation was literally loose.I mean like It needed 2,3 extra rotations to tighten and that black panel was really moving back and forth in that spot. Its the metallic looking screw next to the disc drive on the outer edge of the console. So far the sound dissapeared again. Will report in couple of days

After tightening that loose screw I haven't heard that sound at all and as I said every morning I was getting it every single day since I bought it. So 8 days in Europe. Now for 2 days it's silent. I'm gonna apply some oil on the fan bearing too as I have tiny bit of whine coming directly from the fan. My console is pretty quiet now. To the point of my phone not being sensitive enough to record that sound. So won't upload to you tube. Unless I upload how quiet it is.😄

I have seen the reply’s, the 4 on the drive that you can see are tight and didn’t move at all, tried this last night.

I don’t want to do too much and void warranty on the console

Makes sense. Did you see the last screws on the vent panel that he was talking about? In his case, those were the culprit. In terms of warranty, just make sure and not remove any stickers or anything that could be identified.

Your call, as at some point it sounds like it is heading back to Sony if these easy checks don't fix it.

I didn’t see the last screws but will double check later. Appreciate your input.

Got another work colleague checking theirs for me.

Yeah it was these screws that he said to tighten which solved his issue, I think they are accessible just by removing the face plates which won't void warranty so hopefully may be an easy fix, if it turns out to be the cause.

I put mine horizontally and get no noise but after watching the video I posted I won't be trying it out vertically either just in case mine does it too lol.

Only one sensible option, reject it under Consumer Rights Act 2005 as not being of satisfactory quality.

Return it to the retailer for refund or replacement.

Someone on OCUK had theirs replaced by Sony in less than a week.

Same applies for retailers, they’ve been told to hold onto a few as returns replacements.

No harm in asking the retailer you purchased it from if you haven’t already.

I purchased it from Game online and have sent them a ticket, waiting for a reply.
