My leftfield choice would be a Suzuki Swift Sport 1.4 Booster Jet.
On paper, it doesn't look all that but when looking for a car for my girlfriend we test drove one and both absolutely loved it.
They are fast enough to make progress but slow enough to actually use the available power and have fun.
They are very well equipped - auto high beam, adaptive cruise control, rear camera, car play/android auto etc.
Very practical - decent boot and rear legroom.
Economical - we average 50mpg.
It's a bit different, there aren't many about.
And for your budget, you can get one that is only a year old with under 10k on the clock.
If you want a daily driver that is going to be reliable, cheap to run and maintain and still fun, this would be my pick.
Though if it is going to be an occasional use car or weekend car then I'd be looking at a 182 Trophy.
