As far as I can ascertain my bro in law's car has not been serviced or had an oil change in 3.5years. it's a 2012 pug 207 1.4 petrol. It only does 2/3k a year.

I've come into a suction pump recently so I've told him it is probably a good idea to change the oil now. I'm not gonna mess about changing the filter etc this weekend as I don't have time, just going to do the oil, so the car doesn't die. He'll have to get it serviced properly when he had the time and money.

Given the time it's not had an oil change for a while I'm wondering if it's worth buying the cheapest oil possible, from asda or Wilko's or whatever, draining the old stuff, putting the new cheap stuff in, take it for a drive, suck that out as a sort of cheap flush, then bung in the required full synth oil I got for him from eurocarparts.

Is the flush with the oil from asda or whatever worth doing? It's not my car and unfortunately the reality is he really doesn't give a st about it so ideally i want to minimise the time I have to spend on this task this weekend.

Any thoughts...

I would add a can of Forte engine flush, go for a good 30 minute run, then change the oil AND oil filter. On those Pug engines its important to use the correct grade of top quality engine oil.

i wouldn't bother just doing the oil, it needs the filter doing at the same time - the filter is just as important

I'd do a coolant change as well to protect the HG.

Cheers all. Found a crossland filter on eBay for 4 quid which fits so I've purchased that. I know they are not best filters out there but it would pain me to see the car die for the sake of £15 quids worth of oil and a £4 filter.

I know what you mean. He's just had his second kid and is finding it very hard, so I'm trying to be sympathetic (yes I know he isn't the first person in the world to reproduce twice) and he is neglecting lots of aspects of his life... maintenance of his car included. It would pain me to see the car lunch itself for the sake of me spending 20 quid and a couple of hours changing the oil.

He's the sort of bloke that takes it for the mot and expects anything to be picked up then rather than it being properly cared for and serviced!

With such a low annual mileage it really shouldn't do much hard to have not had an oil change for so long.

Anyhow, back on topic; just drain it off and replace it. I'm tempted to say you'll need a paint scraper to get it out, but that would be hyperbole.

You’ve not watched any of these IS series on YouTube not started in 40 years whilst left outside rotting away.

No oil change they get em started properly first and only then would they consider changing the oil.

Maybe get him to do the work with you? That way he can see the old dirty oil and hopefully learn from it.

Many cars go through their dealership life from new with so few oil changes too. The customer doesn't usually know, and the service book is stamped....but often the work is not done and rarely do they come to harm

But really, for such a cheap car....an oil/filter change costs very little, zero excuse for not doing it

My neighbour had a 2nd hand toyota that hadnt had an oil change in the ten years since he bought it from a toyato used car dealership ( scottish guy deep pockets short arms you know the type).

He reckoned that not getting it serviced would save him money in the long run - however it eventually went bang and the conrod escaped via the block.

He sold the car as a non runner and the person who bought it put a salvage engine in it and continues to use it daily.

The amount he lost in the resale value as a non runner was a lot less than having it serviced over ten years so I think he actually came out better off.

His wife was a bit miffed to have to be recovered from Liverpool to London went it went bang, but she got a brand new car and he's doing the same again apparently.

Modern oil is exceptional.

Provided it’s topped up is the oil is being changed by virtue of engine burning a little oil.

But frankly not changing oil and oil filter it’s a £50 oil and filter job that takes what 15 mins and that’s only if your leaving it drip drip out.

It’s great viewing.

Another is trying to get ruined random machinery to work. One from memory is a chainsaw that was submerged for years on end. Utterly ruined. Somehow abs for the satisfaction of doing it he gets it running.
