I like the idea of a digital photo frame but think the execution is horrendous.

Who wants an illuminated digital screen on in their house all the time? No one. Its distracting, ugly, and power thirsty.

I've had a search online and it dawned on me that an e-paper digital photo frame would be ideal. Sure, you're limited to greyscale, but we have quite a few B&W photos about the house already, but nothing seems available off the shelf.

I thought about buying a second had e-reader and trying to do it that way, but all the inexpensive ones are small and limited to a few shades.

My question is (being an electronics n00b) how difficult would it be to make one? I'm handy at making and designing mechanical bits, but electronics is a new one on me. If I can get something operational then making a frame and case for it later is no issue.

This one looks like a reasonable display and comes with a RPi hat. Obviously I'd need an Rpi, but what else? And then comes the programming, which I have no idea about...

Any input welcome.

Should be simple, but thats a relatively small screen. It might make a nice desk photo frame but not much more...

You could of course buy several, set the photo using the pi, then remove the pi and leave the image there until you decide to change it again. It's probably cheaper and easier just to print the pictures you want, unless you want to swap very often.

It's worth noting that there are some paper displays that allow a 3rd colour (red/yellow, black & white), so better, but still can't do full colour.

Anyway, sounds like a straightforward project, please show us your progress smile
